Chapter 2

Cabinet Battles and Rivalries

Alex sits at his desk quickly working through the remaining documents concerning the cabinet meeting. Burr sits on the other side of his desk, quietly reading through one of Alex's books. A light knock on the door makes Alex tear his gaze away from the papers.

"Come in," he said.
A slightly sheepish looking James Madison opened the door and walked in.
"The meeting has been moved up," he tells Hamilton and Burr. "It begins in 10 minutes."
Alex looks a little unsettled at this. "I'll be down in a minute. I need to finish these last few pages first."
James nods and takes his leave.

"Alexander, you've been over these papers before, is it most necessary to go over them again?" Burr asked.
"Burr, this is important. I need to make sure everything is perfect."
Burr rolls his eyes and snatches the papers away from Alex. "Come, Washington will understand if you didn't have time."
Alex sighs and puts his pen back on the table, grabs the documents from Burr and heads out the door of his office. Burr smiles in victory and follows him, closing the door on their way out. They head to the hall where the meeting would be held. They arrive and take their seats, waiting for everyone else to arrive. Jefferson arrived with a sullen looking James trailing after him.

Washington arrives last, and announces the start of the meeting.

- I'm lazy so this is just song lyrics, feel free to skip

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here in New York city tonight to hold a cabinet meeting.

The issue on the table, Secretary Hamilton's plan to assume state debt and establish a national bank. Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor, sir."

Thomas stands up and lays out his many notes.

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

We fought for these ideals we shouldn't settle for less

These are wise words, enterprising men quote 'em

Don't act surprised, you guys, 'cause I wrote 'em (ow)

But Hamilton forgets

His plan would have the government assume state's debts

Now, place your bets as to who that benefits

The very seat of government where Hamilton sits."

"Not true!" Hamilton exclaims, but is silenced by a glare from Washington.

"Oh, if the shoe fits, wear it

If New York's in debt why should Virginia bear it?

Uh, our debts are paid, I'm afraid

Don't tax the South 'cause we got it made in the shade

In Virginia, we plant seeds in the ground

We create, you just wanna move our money around

This financial plan is an outrageous demand

And it's too many damn pages for any man to understand

Stand with me in the land of the free and pray to God we never see Hamilton's candidacy

Look, when Britain taxed our tea, we got frisky

Imagine what gon' happen when you try to tax our whisky."

Thomas goes to sit down , and Washington stands up again. "Thank you, Secretary Jefferson. Secretary Hamilton, if you could take the floor and give us your response."
