AFTER SETTING UP CAMP and feeding the white wolves she adored so much, Azalea appointed a much younger hunter for first watch and made herself comfortable in Artemis' tent. She'd discarded her silver ski parka to her side, already feeling warm from the fire.
She brought out her father's dagger, which was one of the only two items she'd taken from her palace before she left. She zoned out as Artemis was speaking to the girl who's name she later learned to be Bianca Di Angelo, she did something she did every night, she cleaned her father's dagger (which made the other hunters think she had OCD or something)
It had been over nine hundred years since she swapped it out of her father's box of his most treasured possessions along with the ruby necklace that used to belong to her mother.
She'd never used it for battle, it was sentimental. It reminded her of how she had abandoned her family and courtly life to be with the hunters. And for centuries she had lived with regret and the thoughts of what if.
The idea of living forever, traveling, and being with girls like her and never having to worry about arranged marriages and romance seemed priceless at the time, she was young, foolish, spoiled and only cared about herself then, so she pledged to join the hunt right at the spot without thinking it over.
Was that what she really wanted then? Yes.
But now? Not really.
Sometimes, when she give in to her whirlwind of thoughts, she'd think about having a normal life. Growing up as a normal girl whose only worry wasn't how to survive being attacked by a monster, but puberty, boys, friendships etcetera... Growing old peacefully with her kids and grandkids around her.
Then when she would 'return to her senses', she'd think it was her mother Aphrodite messing with her mind and making her want things those other dumb girls did. Aphrodite and Azalea hadn't been in good terms since she joined the hunt, the last time she saw the most annoying goddess in Greek mythology, Azalea had told her she could 'shove her stupid love and romance crap up her butt.'
She was still puzzled why Aphrodite hadn't turned her into a swan. Probably it was because she didn't want to get on Artemis' bad side...
Again.
To sum it up, Azalea was tired of being immortal, she wanted a life in which she could actually grow up and live life as a normal demigoddess. Only Zoë knew of her wishes and tried to talk her out of it a few times, and Azalea couldn't exactly just walk up to Artemis and demand to leave the hunt. It hadn't been done before, and she wasn't sure Artemis would let her leave without being turned into a wild animal or something.
Bianca was done with her story, Artemis turned to Zoë, "Fetch Percy Jackson." When it seemed that Bianca barely understood what was going on.
As Zoë left, Azalea went over to Bianca, "Hey."
