None of the people of Berk remember Briar, and they shouldn't. She wasn't Stoick's real daughter, for all they know she wasn't anyone's.
The youngest son, Stoick's blood, Hiccup, was only six years of age at the time of her arrival. He was the one that found her outside their door on that rainy day, she was wrapped in a lamb's pelt that barely covered all her body. She was just a baby, a little and crying baby.
Stoick was lost on what to do with the girl. He couldn't leave her be, what kind of chief or a man would that make him? Although still confused, the chief took the orphaned little girl into his house and titled her as his daughter: young Briar.
All of life seemed to go on in Berk. Though the rumors spread slowly of a new adopted princess, the chief's household had never been in more of a buzz. At least for the boy, Hiccup.
He took so well to Briar. On most days Stoick would be too busy to spend any quality time with either of them, but they always had each other. Hiccup was already a naturally gifted caretaker.
The two children did not share the same blood, though they shared similar physical traits they believed. Both of them had the blue and green eyes, and both of them had rosy red cheeks all the time. It was through that very trait that Hiccup gave Briar her nickname. Rose.
For five years young Briar lived in the chief's house. She and Hiccup were the best of friends, kindred spirits, brother and sister.
But the happiness would not last.
In the midst of that fifth year, a supposed neighboring village chief visited the island of Berk. Stoick was unaware Berk had any neighboring villages, he was suspicious of their visit...before he heard their offer.
A trade: an alliance, for a bride. The island of Herode had a young prince, who's father wished to pledge to another young but foreign girl. This ensured his son's future, as well as the protection of the two islands.
Stoick knew just who to give to the Herodian prince. Briar. She was young, the same age as the prince, it could be a perfect match for all they know.
And besides, Stoick had never taken much to Briar anyhow. He always found it strange to have her under his roof, she wasn't his. The only reason he ever let her stay was because she had no place else to go. Now she does, she has a real chance.
For the best of everyone, Stoick made the trade, and he sent Briar away.
All of life seemed to go on in Berk. Though rumors spread quickly, news of a new alliance to a strange land, the chief's household had never been more still. Hiccup was distraught after the loss of poor Rose.
How he missed having the little someone he could talk to, the only someone he felt that needed him; his best friend, his little sister.
Hiccup, at the age of eleven at the time of Briar Rose's displacement, had to go on with his life. At first it was a challenge. But as all children do, they grow, they make new mistakes, they forget their old ones.
By this time now, Hiccup never thinks of little Briar Rose. She lies dormant in his memories...but now that he's chief..
It's about time he be reminded of her.
