It seemed like it took hours for Hiccup to get back to Astrid. When he actually got there, he was relieved to her their just playing with Bel as if nothing was wrong. But as soon as Astrid looked to him her smile faded, but Bel kept laughing. "What? What happened?" Astrid asked in a panic.
She put Bel down and let her walk around then went to her husband. He wouldn't look her in the eye. "Baby," she addressed, placing her hand on his cheek. That made him finally look. But he talked slow, "Rose is dying."
Astrid widened her eyes at him and lowered her hand. "What?" She said in shock. Hiccup shook his head and walked toward the bed. "She's looks dead right now, but soon she'll wake back up like nothing happened. Then on her birthday...she'll fall asleep...and she won't wake up again." He explained as he sat down, slouching his shoulders.
Astrid didn't ask anymore questions, though she didn't understand. She knew Hiccup didn't either. She just went and sat next to him on the bed, comforting him again.

Hiccup wanted desperately to leave, but he couldn't do that to the queen. The week went by like molasses. Everybody suffered through it, but none were as tortured as Hiccup. He was a wreck and stayed most of the days up in the stables with Toothless. Only heaven knows where the queen was, nobody ever saw her.
Astrid snuck into Rose's room every day, she didn't know why she wanted to do it. It scared Bel to see her mother like that, her body looking like it was already decomposing. But Astrid made her suffer through it. After all, she'd be completely without her mother soon.
Astrid would just sit there with Bel and talk to Rose. She found herself saying the darnedest of things, she was opening up to a practically dead body. She was that desperate to talk to somebody...

On the last day of the week that Rose was supposed to be asleep and Hiccup was up in his normal hideout, the oddest of visitors came up to the stables.
Hiccup had been leaning on Toothless and rambling to him for no good reason when he heard a staff hit the ground. Startled, leaned up on his knees to see who was in here with them.
It was the queen. He didn't even hear her walk up, it was just her staff. His head reached her view and she shifted her gaze from her dragon's stable to him. "Chief of Berk." she addressed. That was apparently her greeting. "Your majesty." He replied.
The queen then paid no more mind to him and she stepped closer to her dragon's stable. Toothless didn't look at the queen, but he was already growling at her. Hiccup pet him so he'd cut it out.
"Maleficent." The queen called, and a skinny dragon's head came out of the shadows. Its skin was sagging from its neck, and its yellow belly was faded to a more so grey color. This was an old dragon.
It laid its head on the fence of the stable, as if it were unable to hold itself up otherwise. But when the queen put her hand on the dragon, it began to morph. The saggy parts became toned again, the yellow was vibrant, and the eyes glowed a bright purple.
"Whoa." Hiccup commented. The queen smiled. "She lives off the pain and anger of others..." She explained. Hiccup said nothing, fear mostly being the reason, and the queen looked at him. "Come and try it. Let's see how much anger you're keeping, great chief." She beckoned.
Toothless stared at Hiccup, begging him silently not to pay mind to that dragon. But Hiccup hopped over the stable fence and held his hand out to Maleficent. The queen took her hand off her and the dragon morphed into the old snake once more. Its head dropped onto the ground, the strength the queen had given it gone.
