"You're late." I said while leaning against the door frame. Dominic volunteered to accompany me to go to Vauxhall Cross, the main headquarters of MI6 is located, besides Timothy, who has insisted to come along. Timothy has to leave his weapon behind as according to the local law. I decided to take the local subway to maintain a low profile. Pulling the hood over my hair to conceal my identity the three of us left, Dom also wearing a hoodie while Timothy puts on a pair of sunglasses. We opted to keep a distance in order to not arouse suspicion. The train arrived fifteen minutes later and we entered, sitting in separate places but not far enough to lose sight of one another. Doing what I usually do back in my FBI days I plugged in my earphones, listening to music and keeping my head low.
While listening to the music I felt another pair of eyes looking at me. The gaze wasn't in shock or awe but with recognition. Pulling over the hood to conceal my looks further the train reached the station. "Mind the gap." said the conductor from the PA system installed in the station. Grabbing my backpack I disembarked from the train, climbing the stairs along with the other passengers. I've kept a can of pepper spray in my backpack in case of any sign of trouble. While walking I noticed a few glances thrown at my direction from a few men, some locals, and some foreigners. Keeping that in mind I quickened my pace and made it to the broad daylight of London's streets. Dominic and Timothy has already blended into the crowd as I called Uncle Roland while connected to my earphones.
"Uncle? It's me. We reached the station."
"Got it." he replied on the other side. "Anyone following you along the way?"
"I have the same feeling years ago on today's train."
"What? Again?" he sighed on the other side. "Is it your husband?"
"I don't know." I replied as Timothy caught up to me. "But I think we have been targeted."
"Hold on." he said. I can hear his footsteps on the other side and his voice was heard but he is not talking to me. "Tanner, could you please pull up the security footage at the Vauxhall Cross Station?" Dominic soon caught up and we moved at a faster pace, now walking on the bridge overlooking the MI6 headquarters. "How far are you guys from MI6?"
"Crossing the bridge, at least five minutes." I replied.
"You're correct about the whole being targeted theory. The people you mentioned has international arrest warrants." he added. We soon reached the entrance to the building and Tanner greeted us there.
"Good morning, Madam Vice President." he greeted politely. "These two must be your friends he had mentioned earlier."
"Yes, and good morning to you as well, Tanner." I replied. The security of the building is fortified with the latest technology and visitors have to pass through rigorous security scans before access was granted. Men and women armed with carbine or assault rifles patrolled the perimeter, the elevators also requiring keycards to access.
"We have been improving our security systems since you informed us about the stolen system that somehow makes their way to America." Tanner said after pressing the elevator button. "And into the hands of criminals."
"I'm appalled to be honest." we stepped into the elevator and Tanner pressed a keycard against the scanner, the elevator then moving upwards.
"Should the occasion arise Mr. Churchill has a keycard ready for you." he added. "We also have identified the individuals you said were following you." the elevator reached the top floor and Tanner stepped out, pressing his keycard on the scanner. The scanner beeped and the door's lock mechanism unlocked, allowing the door to be opened. "Bulletproof glass." he said. Leading us past the tables of the intelligence agents and officers he stopped in front of a door. Turns out Uncle Roland has already moved his office inwards. "Sir, they're here." Tanner addressed his boss. The chief looked up from his computer and nodded. He always opted for casual wear and therefore I'm not surprised to see him wearing a button down and pants.
"Glad that you made it unharmed." he said. He pointed at the stack of files on his desk. "Every file we compiled upon the deceased veterans." I moved to the desk and started putting them into my backpack after checking. "We have hits on the lads you mentioned in the train station earlier." he said. We gathered behind Tanner as he pulled up the facial recognition system on his computer, the screen displaying the identities of the men in the Tube. "Turns out that they're wanted by the CIA as well as MI6."
"You weren't aware?" I asked.
"It was before my time." he replied. "I only came in after my predecessor passed away."
"Did you recognize anyone?" Tanner asked me. I glanced through the photos but shook my head in the end.
"No." I replied.
"You have to be careful from now on." Uncle Roland said. "We have yet to determine the identities of the shadows hunting you all and the veterans."
"We're playing a game of chess." I said. "We're not moving our pieces until they show their hand."
"Our enemy is smart, but they can't hide for long." Dominic determined. "We'll find them, and then bring them down."
