Raleigh and I walked out of Gipsy to be greeted by the whole facility. He helped me to walk, my arm over his shoulder and his arm around my waist. Helmets off and walking slowly we rounded to the cafeteria to be greeted by hundreds more. Enclosing us I moved closer to Raleigh and when I looked up to see him, he had a grin on his face."Raleigh!" We heard Herc cry over the crowd. As he pushed forward his right arm in a sling the crowds noise died down. He looked to me, a smile on his face and shook my hand, best her could. After he let go he turned back and we saw Chuck and he smiled at me. I gave a pain filled nod and looked to Herc as he spoke to Raleigh. "My kid'd never admit it. But he's grateful." The two men shook hands and Raleigh smiled. "We both are." Herc added as he looked to me. Raleigh too looked at me and rested his head against my temple. I smiled and hissed a little. As Raleigh leaned back we both looked to Chuck as he gave us a thankful nod. I gave a tired and weak smile in return. My body was aching badly and I needed to rest. We then heard doors open behind us and we all turned. Raleigh carefully helped me turn in his arms as Pentecost's booming voice was heard over the loudness of the door.
"Mr Becket! Miss Ivory!" a pathway from the crowd formed as he came up to us, Mako behind him. She peeked around and gave a thumbs up and I smiled. "In all of my years fighting," he cried, lower and calmer than just a few seconds ago he reached us, "I've never seen anything like that." He smiled. "Well done. Proud of you." I felt tears float in my eyes from the pain in my body and the kind words of Pentecost. "Proud of us all. But.." He cried as Mako came to my side, hugging me lightly. I pulled her close to me and placed some of my weight onto her. "As harsh as it sounds," Pentecost raised his voice again, moving around Raleigh. Mako and Raleigh turned me carefully again as he continued, "there is no time to celebrate. We lost two crews." A pause and silence was heard as everyone took in Pentecost's words. "No time to grieve." He then span around and looked to the war clock. "Reset that clock." He called and the crowd went into small chatter among themselves and I felt Raleigh's grip on me tighten a little. I winced at the pain and he instantly released.
"Sorry." He whispered. I then looked up at Pentecost to see blood dripping from his nose. He caught my wondering eye and I gestured to it. He brought his hand up to see blood falling onto his hand. He then grabbed a handkerchief and repeated.
"Reset the clock." He then walked off, placing pressure onto his nose. I felt Mako release me as she ran after him through the crowd. Raleigh looked to me, slightly confused and I gave him a saddened look. He wasn't informed about Pentecost's sickness.
Getting to Raleigh's room he set me down on his bed and grabbed a chair to sit by me.
"What was all that about with Marshal?" he asked, rubbing my forehead to try and ease the pain. My back was feeling a little better now I wasn't standing.
"It's the side effect of fighting in a nuclear Jaeger for too long." I explained.
"But we've both done that."
"Not as long as he has. You and I have fought at max 30 minutes to an hour. Any longer and we would have a slightly less severe condition as Pentecost. He fought in his Jaeger, Tango for three hours. His side effect is radiation poisoning and if he was to get into another Jaeger, nuclear or not, he would die." I described to Raleigh. He nodded his head and brushed a piece of hair that had fallen in my face.
"How's your back?" he questioned, rubbing my head again. I closed my eyes and tried to relax.
"A little better. I just need to rest." I opened my eyes again to see his eyes fill with curiosity. I chucked lightly and he gave me an odd look.
"What?" he questioned.
"I know you wanna know about what happened to me, but I barely have the energy to keep my eyes open. Go speak to Pentecost if you want to question him about his sickness." I told Raleigh. He shook his head.
"No. I'm not leaving you here." I smiled kindly and raise my shaky hand to rest on his face.
"Hey, I'll still be here when you get back." My hand then slipped. "If you're that worried get Mako to stay here with me." Raleigh then nodded his head.
"Okay. You rest, I'll go yell at Marshal." He smiled.
"Sounds like a plan." I smiled back. He then leaned over and kissed my forehead and I let my eyes close as I heard the door close.
I woke the next day and my back felt normal again. I went to turn and get up when I felt something tighten around my waist and I took in my surroundings. I was still in Raleigh's room...and I turned my head to see a sleeping Raleigh. Shock then filled my face. I thought kissing Raleigh, him saying he likes me and going back to his room was all a dream. A heavy breath was heard behind me and I turned to see Raleigh's eyes flutter open.
"Mornin." He smiled. I turned around and got closer to his chest.
"Morning." I smiled back. Raleigh then leaned forward and kissed my forehead. "What happened last night?" I questioned. Raleigh pulled back and I noticed he was back in his normal clothes.
"Well," he sighed, "I left and you fell asleep. I went to Marshal, like you said. He told me pretty much everything you said, but he did add that fighting solo was a reason why he brought me back and didn't just put you in. He also explained he didn't want to throw you back in a Jaeger for he feared that you would go through the same thing he is. Then I came back here and you were still sleeping. I got changed, showered and then came here." He explained. We then both got up and Raleigh pushed himself up to run in front of me. I gave him a confused look.
"What are you doing?" I asked as I swung my legs over the bed. Raleigh laughed lightly.
"Helping you stand up, what else." He replied. I shook my head and placed a hand on his shoulder as I stood up.
"My back's okay now. You don't need to worry." He seemed to relax under my touch as I finished my sentence. I then moved around him to the door but I felt a hand grab my wrist. I turned back to see Raleigh a little sad.
"Where are you going?"
"Going back to my room to change." Raleigh's hand then slipped and he nodded his head. I shook mine as I smiled. "You don't have to worry, I'm not going anywhere." I then left and ran into my room. Jumping onto my bed, I screamed into my pillow. I was someone to Raleigh.
