✧ JUST A LITTLE RUSH, BABE ✧
Brianna wasn't sure how Barry got this many clients, or how they all seemed to need product at the exact same time, but it was happening.
The trailer was saturated with a dirty haze, and Brianna coughed as she attempted to clean up the empty beer bottles that littered the floor. As she finished the main room, she moved toward the porch with a determination to avoid any and every individual currently loitering in the area.
When she looked ahead, the sudden sight of a man blocking the doorway made her pause for a moment. He was tall and burly, with a cruel look in his eye that advised her not to interact.
She considered her options for a moment, wishing more than anything not to become a stain on the floorboard. But, with only one entrance to the trailer, she had no choice but to continue forward.
She made a cautious attempt to step past him. With her exceptional luck, Brianna's foot instantly caught the floorboard, her shoulder knocking into the man's arm. The reaction was immediate.
"Watch it, bitch."
The words were spit in her ear, foul and aggressive. She couldn't bring herself to look up, tried to slip away. But then there was a shove at her back and she fell forward, empty beer bottles clattering beneath her. A low laughter rumbled throughout the room.
Brianna glanced around at the spectators while she gathered the mess. One of them was Barry. He took a hit of his blunt and looked her dead in the eye, unfazed.
Letting out a shaky breath, she picked up her mess and carried it to the garbage bin outside. The pulse of Barry's stereo was quieter there, almost peaceful. She took a deep breath, savoring it.
After a second, she heard a frustrated huff from nearby. Someone else had pulled into the yard and was trying and failing to prop up a brand new motorcycle on its kickstand.
She let out a quiet laugh, slowly walking to the scene to get a better look. She'd never seen something so shiny brought to The Cut before.
But then the guy took of his helmet, and she froze to the spot. It was the stranger from the other night. She knew it the moment she saw his slicked back hair and unpleasant expression.
He finally steadied his bike, then turned to walk toward the trailer. Toward her.
Her head spun with indecision over what an appropriate reaction would be for the situation. She had barely said three words to him the other night, but she still felt the urge to acknowledge him in some way. Their eyes met and she simply stared, thoughts coming to a halt.
In fact, neither of them spoke. An unreadable expression passed over his face and he walked past her without a second glance.
She stood there for a moment, confused. There hadn't been any recognition in his eyes. She wondered how out of it he had been the night before.
Not wanting to dwell on it, Brianna shuffled back inside. Her cousin was missing from his lounge chair and she knew exactly what that meant.
It made her frown. She wanted to look for them, to warn that boy to get the hell out of here. But it wasn't her place. And she didn't have the courage to pass by the man in the doorway again.
