Jihyun sat at her desk, working like she did every day.
She went over the cases, arguments and briefings. She was on the phone with many of her clients and potential clients but mostly doing paperwork when her door opened.
Her assistant looked annoyed as she stood behind her mother and step-father.
"I told them they were busy but they didn't listen."
"Narae, it's okay."
"Are you sure? I won't mind calling security on them."
"I'm sure, thank you, Ms. Son." Her assistant left the room, closing the door. Jihyun's eyes hardened when she glanced at the couple.
"What are you two doing here? I'm working." Jihyun said, her heels clicking the marble floors as she went to grab a drink.
"It's been three days since you randomly left your own apartment and haven't spoken to us since. We came to visit you, it would be nice if you could spend a day with us."
"You came to Seoul unexpectedly, so forgive me if I can't get off time on such short notice. You could've given me more than 16 hours of a warning."
"Stop being so ungrateful! You're the owner of the firm. You're your own boss, you could take time off whenever." Jihyun scoffed at her mother's intelligence.
"That's not how this works, mother. I have clients with court dates between next week and the next three months. I need to prepare for them, not to mention as a top attorney, I am in high demand. I get new clients every day and so do most of the lawyers at this firm. So, I'm sorry I seem 'ungrateful' but that's just how things are."
She set the whisky glass on her desk, her hands furiously typing away at the keys on her keyboard.
"At least have dinner with us tonight, you can spare an hour, can't you?" Henry asked, sitting in front of Jihyun. His aged green eyes piercing into her dark brown, almost black, eyes.
She turned her gaze away from him, feeling chills run down her spine.
" I don't know."
"Josephine."
"Mother. I'm busy, okay? I don't know if I can have dinner with you. Why don't you guys just tell me what you're really doing here or go back to London. I don't need you here and I certainly don't need you making my life harder than it is." Jihyun snapped, her gaze sharp.
Jihyun's mother sat beside her husband, across from Jihyun.
Her hands stopped typing and looked at the pair in front of her.
"What?"
"We need a lawyer."
"Okay, get one. There are hundreds downstairs."
"Damn it, Josephine. Just... listen."
"I am, you just paused on 'we need a lawyer' and I assumed that you were stating a fact." Her mother rolled her eyes at her daughter.
"Your father, he's been accused of sexual assault on a minor. Now, we both know that isn't true, so we need someone to help us in court." Jihyun stared at the man in front of her. The man that stole her innocence, caused hundreds of sleepless nights and made her into a shell of nothingness for so much of her life.
She scoffed.
"You have no evidence that you didn't do it."
"Josephine Jeon! How dare you!"
"You want me to be your lawyer, let me be your lawyer, Mrs. Lewis." Jihyun stood up, standing up straight, proud and confident. "Your husband has no true evidence that he did not, in fact sexually assault the plaintiff. You haven't brought me a case to go off of. You've given me no reason to trust that you didn't. In fact, I have a strong feeling that he did assault the victim and many more. On top of that, I have morals and I will never defend a rapist or an accused rapist because statistically, when the defendant is accused as being a rapist, typically, they are a rapist."
