Steve's eyes widened at that moment when he said it out loud. And as if in cue, the dimly-lit sky was suddenly painted with bright red, blue and white hues as the loud firework sounds accompany them.
Bucky couldn't fathom everything that just happened just mere seconds ago, but those three powerful words sent him on cloud nine. It was too overwhelming.
He loves him. Steve loves him. His Stevie loves him.
And yet all he could do was stare at the man's eyes, who returned the loving gaze. Bucky loved how there was a little bit of green in Steve's blue eyes. He was so perfectly imperfect.
Bucky could feel his heart leaping. Finally, after all those years of being jealous of Peggy, battling HYDRA, forgetting Steve all those years, his best friend had reciprocated his feelings for him.
What a miracle.
Steve, on the other hand, doesn't regret anything at all. It was the right time. And it was finally time. He knew it was the perfect moment to tell Bucky how much he cared and loved for him.
Bucky was at loss for words. They were standing outside the balcony of their apartment, and the fireworks show had ended. Bucky could care less about that, though. All he could manage to do was to stare at Steve's handsome face and adore all of his wonderful features.
And so, without wasting any more time, Bucky lets out a shaky breath, ready to confess his great love for his best friend. "I love you, Steve."
"I know," Steve says with a soft smile.
Bucky's overwhelmed expression suddenly got replaced with a confused one plastered all over his face. "What?"
"Don't take it the wrong way," Steve tries to reassure the fragile brunette. "I've known for quite a while you had feelings for me."
With this adding up, Bucky could hardly digest anything that's happening right now. He could barely swallow a gulp.
"...a-and you didn't say anything at all?"
"Buck—"
"How did you know." It was more of a statement than a question. He didn't know how to feel at the moment. It's all too much to take in.
Who knew a person like the Winter Soldier could have the most fragile heart to exist?
I guess Bucky deserves nothing but the truth, Steve thought. If he doesn't tell Bucky sooner, he knew he would push Bucky farther away from him. He didn't want that.
"Peggy told me when I was at the quantum realm," he admitted. God, I don't wanna hurt him any more. It's painful to see him broken.
For the first time in a while, Bucky looks away from Steve's eyes, and looked down. Disappointed, but not surprised. "Of course," he scoffed. He could only feel his heart shatter into pieces.
Seeing that Bucky isn't responding, Steve grew concerned. "Buck?"
It isn't real. Steve doesn't love you. He just feels bad for your weak, stupid self. "I get it, Steve. You don't have to play games anymore."
"What are you talking abou-"
"Stop pretending you love me, Steve," Bucky meets his gaze once again, this time, with anger and sadness. "Please, stop."
"Bucky, I lo-"
"No, you don't." He cuts him off once again. "You're only saying you love me because Peggy told you. I wish I never had told her anyway."
Those words cut right deep into Steve's heart, bringing him more pain than ever. Great. He's more broken than ever.
"Who else told you? Sam? Oh, I bet he did," Bucky scoffed. "What else did Peggy tell you? That I'm desperate? Lonely? Hopeless? Is that why you love me, Steve?"
"Bucky, please..."
"Save it, Steve," the brunette could already feel himself tear up, his voice becoming shaky, as he feels his heart shatter into to pieces. How could Steve be this cruel with his heart? "You don't love me. You don't have to pretend anymore."
"Bucky, please listen to me. I love you, I mean it," the blond pleaded with him, but Bucky couldn't find the means to listen any further.
"You only say that because you pity me," he spat back. "I get it. I never get what I want. My life is complete shit, even when the whole war shenanigan started. Wanna know why? Because I was so desperately in love with you. I had to date every single dame in town just to get my mind off you, but I couldn't."
Steve could feel tears falling down his face.
"I guess I'm just destined to become miserable," Bucky mumbles softly, but still loud enough for Steve to hear.
Steve couldn't believe what just happened. It was all too well at the start, and now it ended with this. It was supposed to be the perfect birthday of his life. And all he had to do was fuck things up.
"I'm sorry," Steve choked as he lets out a quiet sob. It was all he could manage to say. He owes Bucky an apology.
Bucky did not respond, but he stares back at him coldly, face wet with tears, lips swollen, with puffy red eyes from all the crying.
"Don't ever talk to me again."
And with that, he storms out of the balcony, all the way to his bedroom, loudly slamming the door shut, indicating his complete anger. Steve falls to his knees, sobbing.
All of a sudden, he could hear Peggy's soft, loving voice, once again.
Mend his broken heart.
He only did the opposite of that.
And now Bucky doesn't even want to talk to him anymore.
Why did this had to happen?
Did love really had to have painful consequences? Did it always have to end with a broken heart?
Maybe.
With a loud sniff, he wipes away his tears and reaches for his pocket using his other hand. He grabs his phone, frantically scrolling through his contacts, finding for the one person he desperately needed to talk to right now. He presses the call button, in hopes of getting an answer.
"Hey Steve-" Sam was unable to finish his sentence when he heard soft sniffs that accompanied Steve's sobs. Concern grows as he grips the phone harder. "What happened?"
"Sam," Steve chokes out, voice all rusty and nasal from his crying session. "I need someone to talk to."
"I'm all ears, man."

Hi! Sorry for a short chapter. But just to let you guys know there will be a few chapters left to conclude this story. Maybe two or three chapters, depending on how I would write them, but I do have a ending planned out, so yeah! I'm so excited to conclude this story. I'm not getting the vibes for a sequel, since I'm busy. I barely have time to write. My apologies, and thank you for your patience. Love you guys, and stay safe! x
