NEW FLESH
EPILOGUE
A small duration of four months had passed, the two partners collectively deciding to move into an apartment closer to the University campus.
They'd begun their studies- Mitch picking up where he'd left off- Margo was doing good for the most part, the majority of the classes being less of a struggle than she'd thought they would be.
Stan hadn't re-entered either of their lives- not that they wanted him to- things had been calm and quiet as they tried their best to lead the normal lives they'd been stolen of.
More days than not, Margo found herself thinking of her parents and Ronnie, she was the lone survivor of her family, and the sad thing was, they had all died at her hands.
Their blood was on her hands, that was the part that haunted her day and night, from nightmares to intrusive thoughts she sat in her sorrow burying it away until it eventually became too much to handle.
Feeling the space beside him, Mitch sat up when all he felt in his hand was the blanket. Climbing out of bed in only his boxers, he stretched his arms relaxing his shoulders as he walked through the apartment to look for Margo. Approaching the bathroom, he could see the light peeking out from the crack at the bottom of the door, rubbing his eyes he gently knocked on the bathroom door.
He could hear a stifled cry come from behind the wooden door, he tapped on it again, "Margo?" he softly called, her sobs quieted and he leaned his ear against the wood trying to figure out what was going on, "Mar? You alright?" he could hear another stifled cry coming from the other side, reaching for the doorknob he instantly realized it was locked when it refused to turn in his grip.
"Mar, please open the door."
"GO AWAY!" she cried out her voice cracking as she did so, the sound of clattering- something that could only be metal followed. Panic rose like bile in his chest as his brain ran through all the things that could be happening, "Margo, open the door, please." he begged leaning his head against the wooden surface, "I can't do it anymore." she cried her voice being dulled by the wood in between them.
Mitch took a deep breath trying his best to remain calm, "Mar, open the door." he ran his fingers along the metal of the doorknob praying she would just open the door as he'd asked, when he realized she wasn't he slammed his shoulder into the door- his first attempt at getting it open- he slammed his shoulder into the door a second time listening as the wood began to crack from the pressure, repeating the action two more times quickly resulted in the door busting open from its jam.
The brunette rushed in quickly taking in the sight before him, there, on the floor, her face tilted up to the ceiling, Margo sat. Tears stained both her cheeks as she loosely clutched her wrists the crimson red staining her hands in the process, he quickly dropped to his knees beside her pulling the girl into his lap.
"I'm sorry." she cried cracking her eyes open to look at him, "why? Why would you just try to leave?" she shook her head a few more tears dripping down her soaked cheeks, "I can't, it's too much, I just want to be happy, just once." she spoke her voice hoarse from crying.
Mitch glanced up at the ceiling trying his best to fight off tears, "I'm taking you to the hospital." she pulled away from him trying to prevent it from happening, his grip being stronger than hers he ended up successfully getting her out of the bathroom and to the dining room, he grabbed a pair of his sweatpants and the jacket closest to him yanking them on before he went after his shoes.
Moving as quickly as possible, he grabbed his keys and returned to where he'd set Margo down picking her up before he made way for the door. They were heading for the stairs in seconds- Mitch knowing that the elevator would only waste valuable time that he couldn't risk losing- he did his best to get down the four stories between the two of them and the ground level his adrenaline kicking in as he made a run for his car.
Doing his best to get through traffic- with little to no regard for his or anyone else's safety- he made it to the hospital rushing into the ER's parking lot.
Without putting much thought into it, he jumped out of his car and removed Margo from the passenger seat wasting no time in getting her inside where he was greeted by several sets of eyes.
It was two days later that she would awake to someone beating against her hospital door.
She climbed out of bed- almost falling over in the process- he was furiously beating against the small slip of glass, she could hear yelling and the sound of gunshots in the hall, something was wrong.
"MITCH?" she called trying to figure out if he could hear her, he nodded his head leaning closer in towards the door, "they're quarantining everyone, they're not letting us stay, Mar, you have to hide, they have guns- I don't think it's a quarantine."
She shook her head taking a step closer to the door, she could feel her cheeks heating up as she fought off tears, "Mitch- don't go- please don't leave me." he shook his head, she could see tears forming in his eyes- he didn't want to leave her, but he knew if he didn't they would both be dead- "I have to." he replied pressing his hand to the thick glass separating them, she raised her hand placing it to match his along the glass.
"I love you."
She nodded her head clearing her throat before she replied, "I love you too." she watched as Stan yanked him away the two rushing through the hall, she couldn't remember a time she'd felt so abandoned. She would think about that moment for the rest of her life, she didn't want to.
Mitch, running through the halls with Stan stopped when he heard the doorknob of a room get shot off followed by more gunshots and a shrill scream, one that oddly resembled Margos, he attempted to backtrack launching himself in the direction of the noise.
Stan, however, grabbed him by the sleeve yanking him back before he could get in the crossfire, "she's gone, she would want you to keep going, the only way we do that is by getting our asses out of here." he spoke his voice pinched as he tried his best to ignore the fact that he'd just seen Margo for the last time.
