Chapter 11

"Laine!" Dylan calls out, but Artie pushes him back, while two police men take Dylan away.

"No, Dylan!" I try to sit up and scream out but a nurse pushes me back down onto the bed.

I slowly see Dylan being taken away and I can't do anything. Tears form in my eyes.

"I need to go. Where is he going? Please I need to go after him."

"Adelaine, you need to rest."

"But I need to go after him. I can't rest and..." I can't breath.

The monitor beeps loudly. Slowly I see the scene pass before me as my eyes close slowly. What happened to me? What happened to him? Why am I here? All I can remember is what Artie told me and that's it. After that I don't remember anything. I need him to come back!

"Laine, you haven't eaten for weeks." Jess says concerned.

"I don't understand, Jess. Why does Artie get to be here but Dylan doesn't."

"Laine, we've tried to tell you this so many times. Dylan is dangerous. He can't be trusted. Artie tried to save you."

"Dylan is not dangerous. He is innocent."

"Laine, you don't understand. I know you won't believe me. But Dylan is a... Dylan is a..."

"Dylan is what, Jess?"

"A drug dealer, just like Xavier. You got poisoned by one of the drugs he sold. It was a bad batch that they put into the drinks. You are lucky you only had one drink."

"No, he is not like Xavier. He is a million times better!"

"I know, Laine, but..."

"Hey, can I talk to Laine for a second," Artie interrupts.

"I don't want to talk to you, Artie."

"Laine, just listen to him. He is your oldest friend!" Jess gets up to leave.

"Fine, but don't expect me to agree with anything you say."

"I understand you are mad at me Laine but let me just talk to you," Artie walks towards me and sits down in the chair next to my bed.

He reaches for my hand but I refuse.

"What do you have to say? Did Dylan do something else?"

"No, I'm here to say I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have stuck my nose into your business but I'm just scared."

"Scared? Of what? I should be scared here."

"Exactly! I'm scared for you. The whole business with Xavier, I feel like it is all my fault. I should have never introduced him to you. Laine, you are like my sister. I feel responsible for you! We've know each other since forever and I don't want our friendship to be ruined by the mistakes I've made. I hope you understand."

I look into Artie's eyes and I see the truth. I realize that Artie is my rock. Without him I would be nowhere and even though he has hurt me so many times it shows our friendship. I lean forward and hug Artie tightly, a tear streaming down my face.

"I do understand, Artie. I'm sorry too."

We stay in this position for quite some time until Jock enters the room.

"Enough of this sadness. There is someone here for you, Laine."

Artie and I let go and Artie gets up just as the handsome teenager that I fell in love with a few weeks ago walks into the room. He walks towards me and smiles.

"Hi, Laine," Dylan smiles happily which gives me butterflies.

"Dylan," I whisper.

Dylan walks towards me and gives me a big hug and I don't want to let go. I look at Artie who is standing next to Jock and I know he made sure Dylan could come visit. Tears stream down my face and I can't feel happier. Jock and Artie slowly leave the room, as Dylan lets go.

"Hey, don't cry," Dylan smiles.

I look into his eyes, getting lost and wanting this moment to last. I lean towards him and we kiss. The moment lasts shortly but passionately.

Dylan lets go, knowing I'll have trouble breathing. I stare into his eyes again.

"I love you," he says shyly.

I freeze. I know I want to say I love you back but nothing comes out. It is like my body is rejecting him...
