Just another boring day at work.
I sigh, sitting on the stool behind the register. I look around at the semi-full store, most customers dressed in bathing suits or wetsuits. Don't get me wrong, I love this job. It's the people that are the worst part. It's always the bratty blonde girls in bikinis walking around with hot guys who look like they could be in GQ who make my job a living hell. Heck, half of them don't even surf, they just want to look cool with a surfboard under their arm.
I reach my arms behind my head, pulling my long dark hair into a ponytail, my bangs sticking to my face in the summer heat. A woman with short hair walks into the store, a ring of the bell alerting me. I look up from my sketchpad that I'm doodling in, eyes meeting hers as she approaches me. "Hey, what do you need?" I ask, putting my pen down. "Could you show me where the surf board wax is?" she asks boldly, eyes scanning me. I nod, pointing to the side of the store. She gives me a small smile, walking towards the direction. Wow, someone who actually surfs. Haven't seen one of those in a while.
I go back to doodling, scribbling aimlessly. The door chimes again, too distracted to look at the new customer. A moment later, I figure coughs to grab my attention. My eyes slowly look up, coming face to face with a man. The longer I look at him, the more attractive he grows. He has wavy dark hair, big arms and a cute smile. He looks like one of those sexy undercover cops from those movies. "Do you work here" he asks, taking off his sunglasses. His brown eyes are like a fresh pot of coffee, honey tones coming through in the natural lighting. "No, I'm just a big fan" I reply with a sarcastic tone, setting down my pen again. He looks at me for a moment, letting out a light laugh.
I can feel my cheeks growing pink, shy under his attractive gaze. "so, you do work here?" he asks again, looking at my seat behind the register. I straighten up, looking at him fully. "Yes, do you need to buy something?" I respond, eyes drifting away from him to the water that laps the beach. "Yeah, a surfboard" He says. I raise my eyebrows, laughing. He knits his eyebrows, confused. We look at each other for a moment. "Sorry for laughing, It's just that nobody really surfs around here, they kind of just carry around a board to look cool" I quickly add, standing up from my stool.
I can feel his eyes follow me as I make my way around the counter, starting to walk through the store. I would be lying if I said I didn't feel kind of self-conscious under his constant gaze. He silently walks behind me, finally coming to a stop near the back of the store. Racks of surfboards ranging in colors, sizes, and shapes sit around, begging to be bought. I turn around, gesturing my hands in a "Ta-da" way. He looks at the boards, and then me. "So what kind of board you looking for?" I ask, running my fingers across a purple one. "Well...I haven't surf boarded in...a few years..." He replies with short lies in his sentence. I laugh, looking at him from head to toe. "You're a terrible liar, it's okay if you've never surfed before. I get the vibe that you actually want to learn how to, unlike all the other posers here" I say, playfully touching his shoulder.
He smirks under my touch, nodding. Oh those eyes. "Guess I'll have to work on my lying skills then" he replies, tauntingly. I turn my back to him, heading towards a pink, blue, and white surfboard. He'll get a real laugh at this. I pick it up, facing him again. He crosses his arms "Interesting color scheme..." he jokes, giving me another killer smirk. "I think the colors are cute, plus it's an awesome board for beginners" I say, handing him the board. He reaches for the price tag that's tapped to the board, quirking a brow at the piece of paper. "I'll make you a deal" I say, a lightbulb going off in my head. "I like deals, keep talking" he replies, tucking the board under his arm.
"I'll give you the board for free, as long as you let me teach you how to surf. You know, to make sure you aren't a poser or something" I bargain, meeting his eyes. He sighs quietly, pretending to think with a finger on his chin. "Fine, it's a deal" he says after a minute or so, reaching out a hand. I shake his firm hand, my heart picking up pace at the touch. "Every Friday, meet me here at 3" I tell him, giving him one last look. I walk off, smiling from cheek to cheek once I was out of sight. I giggle quietly as I take my seat back at the counter. I watch him leave the store, shaking his head with a smirk. I didn't even catch his name. Funny how I can have a crush on a man who doesn't even have a name.
