Chapter Two

I heard yelling, at first, it didn't seem strange, it was a party after all. Only through listening closer was when I found not excitement, but traces of pain and anger in the faint voices. I walked farther from the clusters of people, and eventually, there was nothing but the voices, which had grown louder. There was a room at the end of the hall, I quietly walked towards it, careful to not make any alarming noises. When I reached it, I carefully twisted the silver doorknob, and slowly pushed open the door. As I did, it slightly creaked, but the two people were too engrossed to notice.

The door was fully open, and I got a close look at the two figures. To my surprise, it was Lena and Kai. I knew that their relationship was rocky, but from what I could tell they had been doing well recently. They didn't seem like people to be arguing where others could so easily hear, which made me realize that it was probably worse than I expected. Briefly, I stood there, listening but unable to comprehend anything.

"I'm done with you- with this," Kai quietly said before abruptly leaving.

By then they had both realized I was there, witnessing another one of their falling outs. Kai didn't seem to mind, he walked right past me without saying a word without a single care. Lena was startled by my presence.

She stared for a while, but once Kai was far gone she spoke to me.

"Both of you, don't say anything, please," she asked while wiping her tears away with her shaking hands.

First I was confused, there was no one here beside us too. I turned my head to look behind, and I saw Taehyung standing a few feet away. It was odd I hadn't noticed him, but there wasn't much to make of it.

We both assured Lena's pleas through silence.

Then, just before she left, I questioned her, "Why do you do it?"

She laughed through her tears and said "Sometimes I don't know why either. Truth be told, you just wouldn't understand," leaving me completely clueless.

What the events that occurred a few moments ago, revealed a new side of Lena. One that I had failed to see before. Her relationship had more depth to it than I realized and for once I sympathized with her.

She quickly walked back to the party, I assumed to distract herself. I then looked at my right and noticed Taehyung staring at me.

And so I asked, "Why were you here?".

"I could ask you the same," he unhelpfully responded before starting to walk back.

I followed and quickly caught up with him. While we walked next to each other there was a distinct aura of pure discomfort and distressing silence.

Unanticipated, he was the first to clear the air with the question.

"Were you having fun?"

"As much fun as I could have at a party like this," I answered.

"You know there are ways you could have more fun at things like this," he told me.

I asked, "What ways?"

"You'll see," he responded.

Shortly after, I was again surrounded by split crowds of dancing high schoolers. He walked toward someone and I followed behind.

"This is Kris," he said when introducing me to his friend.

"Hey, I'm Adia," I greeted him.

Kris handed Taehyung a small bottle of pills. Taehyung twisted the lid, pulled it off, and took two out. He swallowed them dry.
