You Did What, Now?

"You did what, now?" You all but screeched, and he hastily slapped a hand over your face to prevent others from hearing.

"Wait! Hang on, I can explain!" He whisper-yelled before his ears seemed to perk up and he pulled you both taught against the wall, nearly knocking the wind from your lungs in the process. A couple of the weirdly dressed men sprinted past. One almost stopped, but didn't glance in your direction as he continued on. Finally, the Doctor released your mouth and stopped squishing you to him, but kept you close enough that you could feel his breath on your face.

"You have 8 seconds." You demanded, uncapable of any other response.

"Right. So when one travels the universe, they must also be prepared for things they have not previously encountered."

"5."

"Sometimes you'll go places where the air is barely breathable, or the ground is always squishy,"

"3."

"And sometimes the atmosphere is like candy. I mean to say that candy is sweet and edible, but inevitably causes tooth decay and-"

"Doctor! Why are you married to an alien princess and why are her guards chasing us?" You pressed. He huffed indignantly.

"Firstly, I'm not married, or even engaged! Just... Promised. Secondly, those guards are her brothers, and I imagine they would like to protect her honor."

"They're all her brothers?" You sympathized that sometimes families on Earth were known to have 13 children at a time, so it wasn't by any means impossible. You sunk to your knees, still processing everything else. "So they're her brothers, defending her honor from the man who promised to marry their sister and ran away from her twice."

"I did not run away!" He corrected, pausing a moment before slinking down to meet you at eyelevel. "As I stated, sometimes the atmosphere on a planet can be like candy. Edible, but toxic all the same. There is something in the atmosphere here- being burned into it, or just by default- that alters my brain chemistry specifically so that when I leave this planet, I carry almost none of my memories of it with me."

"You mean when- if- we get off this rock, we won't remember any of it? Are there more side effects that I should be worried about? Like my hair or my teeth falling out?" You panicked. You'd completely forgotten about the fact that you could be in all kinds of danger from radiation or air poisoning, being a human on another planet, or even in a different time.

"Hey, Starlight. Hey. Shh." He cooed, grabbing the nape of your neck and trying to get you to look him in the eyes. "I promise. I promise there is no danger to you." An almost imperceptible pause. The slightest shift in his eye. "As far as the air is concerned. I promise. You're safe. I will keep you safe." Calming you down seemed just as natural to him as dancing around the console on the Tardis. You briefly longed for the safety of the sorely changeable ship. "(Y/n)," You immediately answered his quiet command to look at him. His face was a mask of calm. "I would not bring you anywhere I thought you would be in any sort of immediate danger. Should any danger arise, I will protect you with my life. Do you understand?" You mutely nodded. You took  a few moments to regain your composure.

"Tell me everything. Tell me about why it takes away our memory, and how you know the princess."

"It takes away my memory. Not yours." He sighed. "I come from a great and ancient lineage of people called the Timelords. We seem to resemble humans more so than any other creature in the universe, but we are not humans. As we are not humans, our brain chemistry differs widely. Something that affects you might not affect me- at least in the same way, and vice versa. I've tried to work out the mechanics of this strange effect in many ways, so I can tell you that it's the work of some gene that you don't have. I've left myself many, many notes, but I seem only able to make sense of them or even connect them to this place while I'm here." He stopped to check if you were absorbing this information. You nodded and he continued.
