kisa.
"suna, oh my god. if you ask me to become the manager one more time i'm going to drown myself in the fountain." i groaned, pushing past my best friend as he tried to corner me in the empty classroom.
"kis, i'm begging you. you would help our team so much, you don't even know." he pleaded, and i sighed, turning to look at him as we walked towards the lunchroom together.
"becoming a manager for a sports team, let alone a boy's volleyball team, is not something i want to invest my time into. and besides, you know that sara and i are always really busy at home. auntie never seems to let us rest." i replied, pushing my glasses up higher on the bridge of my nose.
"i wouldn't keep asking if i wasn't desperate." he said, and i nodded.
"yeah, i know. look, i'll consider it, okay? if i decide to do it, i'll be waiting outside the gym for you after school." i said, and a smile broke out on his usually expressionless face.
"but! if i decided not to show up, you can't keep trying to guilt me into it." i said, and he nodded.
"deal."
against my better judgement, i decided to wait for suna outside of the gym. thank god no other players from the team came to the gym. if they asked me what i was doing here, i probably would've burst into tears.
"kisa!" i heard someone call. i glanced up to see sara coming towards me, making me furrow my eyebrows.
"hey...what are you doing here?" i asked as she came towards me.
"i came to pick you up. didn't you get my text?" she asked, and i shook my head, glancing down at my phone to see that i didn't have any messages. she let out a sigh.
"why are you waiting outside the gym? is suna's practice almost over or something?" she asked, tucking some of her straight black hair behind her ear.
"no, it hasn't even started. he wants me to look into becoming their manager, so i'm waiting for him to show up." i replied, and she frowned.
"well, mom wanted me to come pick you up because she wants to go get dinner with some work friends." she said, and i nodded slowly.
"i dunno how long i'm gonna be here. i don't wanna let suna down." i said.
"i know, but do you wanna make mom mad? you know how she is." she said as i looked down at my shoes.
"i can always tell suna i'll show up tomorrow, i guess. auntie being mad is the last thing i need." i muttered, starting to walk away with her. i glanced back towards the gym, praying that suna would suddenly come through the door and i could explain it in person.
i climbed into the passenger seat of sara's car, pulling my phone out of my blazer to call suna.
one ring.
two rings.
three rings.
"hey, it's suna. leave a name and number, and i'll get back to you as soon as i can. thanks." came his voicemail. i sighed, looking out the window towards the school as sara drove away.
"hey, it's kisa. i'm sorry i couldn't make it today. my aunt wanted my to come home straightaway. i promise i'll try and show up tomorrow. call me back when you get this. bye."
