Tokoyami is 5 years old but his quirk has yet to appear in any meaningful way. It's not that he's quirkless, as he has the missing bone in his toe, has the feathered head of a crow like his father, but he has none of the abilities that his father's quirk has, such as flight or even wings. It's just taking a while. He is always optimistic and excited when he wakes up every day hoping that today will be the day. The day it manifests. The day that he can show off to his friends. The day that he will be the spotlight and the center of attention. His classmates in kindergarten are hopeful too and don't treat him how midoriya was treated. Tokoyami has the signs, he has the evidence, he just needed to wait for that fateful day.

His father wakes up young Fumikage in the morning before heading off to work. As Fumikage gets out of bed he feels a bit odd. His stomach hurts a bit. He thinks nothing of it as he had a large dinner last night before bathing and heading to bed. He gets dressed for school and leaves his room to wash up and brush his teeth. He passes his mother in the kitchen who is making breakfast and greets her.

Tokoyami: Morning mom! Breakfast smells great!

Ms. Tokoyami:Hey hun! How did you sleep?

Tokoyami:Pretty good! I feel really well rested. My stomach hurts a bit though.

Ms. Tokoyami:I'm sorry. Do you want some medicine to help you feel better? If you are feeling sick you don't have to go to school today.

Tokoyami:Nah I'm good. It's probably just that I ate too much last night. Once I use the restroom I should be fine.

Ms. Tokoyami:Ok if you say so. If it continues during school tell the nurse and I'll come take you back home.

Tokoyami:Thanks but I really should be fine. It's not that bad.

Ms. Tokoyami:Ok. Go wash up while I finish breakfast. It should be ready once you are done.

Tokoyami:Ok Mom!

Tokoyami scurried off to the restroom. He tried to use the toilet but was unsuccessful. He shrugged it off and went to go brush his teeth and wash his hands before returning to the dining room where his mom had set up his plate on the table and was getting hers. He clambered up the chair and went to grab his toast from the plate.

Ms. Tokoyami (coming round the corner from the kitchen): We need to say grace before we eat dear.

Tokoyami:Oh yeah sorry mom.

Ms. Tokoyami (ruffling his feathers as she passed him to set down her plate): It's okay Fumikage just try to remember for next time.

They said grace and began to enjoy their meal.

Tokoyami:This is really good mom. You should be a cook. You would have Lunch Rush begging you to teach him.

Authors Note:Lunch Rush is a really well known chef at this time who owns/runs a small chain of restaurants. He has not yet moved to working at UA.

Ms. Tokoyami (smiling from the compliment): Aww thank you sweetie. That's really sweet. It's nothing special though.

Tokoyami (Taking the last bite of his bacon):C'mon mom lets hurry to school.

Ms. Tokoyami:Ok you grab your bag while I take care of the dishes.

Tokoyami hopped of his chair and went to grab his bag in the living room. He was excited to talk to his friends at school today.

Ms. Tokoyami grabbed her purse and went to the door to see Fumikage practice jumping with excitement.

Ms. Tokoyami (while grabbing two umbrellas from the closet):Well I'm glad to see you are feeling better. Here, put this in your bag, it is probably going to rain this afternoon.

Tokoyami (frowning while putting the umbrella): Aw dangit.

Ms. Tokoyami(closing the closet with a look of concern on her face):Why? Is something wrong Fumikage?

Tokoyami (frowning while zipping up his backpack): If it starts raining, we won't get to go outside for recess. Plus, everyone else seems less happy when it rains.

Ms. Tokoyami (relieved it wasn't something major): Don't worry hun. It shouldn't start raining until about 2pm. Recess will be over by then.

Tokoyami (smiling again):Yay!

Ms. Tokoyami (opening the door): C'mon sweetie let's get in the car, we don't want to be late.

Ms. Tokoyami remotely unlocked the car with her keys while Fumikage tossed his bag in the back seat. Ms. Tokoyami placed her purse on the passenger seat and went to help her son with his seatbelt.

Tokoyami hopped up on the booster seat and reached for the seatbelt.

Ms.Tokoyami:Want me to help you with that hun?

Tokoyami:I want to try it myself! I'm gonna need to know how eventually!

Ms.Tokoyami:That is true. If you can't do it just ask.

Ms. Tokoyami went to go start up the engine while Fumikage pulled the seatbelt over his chest and down to his hip. He fiddled with the buckle for a bit until "Click" His eyes wide and mouth open in surprised smile (kinda like Eri's from the concert in the anime), he turned his head to his mother and met her gaze.

Ms. Tokoyami (a bit surprised): Oh my goodness you did it! I'm really proud of you!

She reached into the back seat to ruffle the feathers on Fumikage's head as a sign of affection.

Tokoyami:Woohoo!

They both smiled as the car left the driveway to head to school.

Timeskip roughly 5 minutes during the drive. Story continues as they pulled up to the campus

Tokoyami hopped out of the car, backpack in tow, having mastered the ancient art of putting on a seatbelt. (I know it's dumb but he's 5. Every new accomplishment feels important)

Ms. Tokoyami:Have fun at school dear! Be nice and try to make some new friends!

Tokoyami:Love you too mom! See you after school!

Tokoyami turned around and began heading to the main entrance of the campus. He stopped and turned around when he heard his mother call out to him again

Ms. Tokoyami: Oh, Fumikage I forgot to tell you! I have a late meeting tonight and won't be able to pick you up after school. Why don't you walk home with Shinso! I'll come pick you up from his house once I'm done with work!

Author's note: Shinso lives in the same neighborhood. They had met a couple of times before Kindergarten as their parents were good friends. They became much closer during the first two weeks as they only really knew each other. FYI they were only about a month into Kindergarten so they didn't have a ton of time to meet kids and make good friends.

Tokoyami (not really phased, having done this once or twice already):Okay I'll see you tonight then mom!

He began to turn back around to head to class.

Ms. Tokoyami:Love you hun! Don't forget your umbrella!

Tokoyami continued walking but turned his head around.

Tokoyami:You too! I won't!

He began to turn his head back around only to slam his beak into a backpack.

Authors Note: Hope that wasn't too bad. I'm not sure how I feel about this method of writing dialogue as I find it a bit hard to express emotions with it written like a play. I'm gonna try a first person perspective next chapter and see how I like that. I have a decent idea of where I want to go with the plot but am still working out the details. If you have any ideas feel free to let me know and I will consider implementing them. If you noticed any grammar or spelling mistakes I would appreciate a comment pointing them out so I can fix them. Any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. I will try to update soon, but I don't have a schedule or anything as I'm just trying this out to see if this is something I'm interested in doing during the rest of the summer. Thanks for reading and have a good day!
