We had already travelled for forty five minutes when Cain started to slow down, changing down a gear. He turned off at the next exit that took us onto a narrow road with no road markings. Trees that edged the road started to thicken as we neared the bush line.
Cain drove us down the narrow road for a few kilometers before he turned off on to a gravel road that seem to disappear into the wall of trees. I shifted in my seat. I was beginning to get a little nervous. I had no idea where I was. I had never been in these parts before.
Cain noticed my unease as he expertly guided us through the dark tunnel of trees. "Don't worry Savannah, I haven't brought you out here to harm you," he flash that boy grin. I gave him a sideway glance before turning my focused to the road.
"Perfect place to dump a body," I joked. That's was something I did when I was feeling nervous or backed into a corner. It was one of my many charms, though not many people appreciated it.
"Ha, why would I dump a body when I can eat it," he said with a sinister tone, again with that grin. My pulse jumped a beat or two. Shit, was he joking? Maybe cracking jokes wasn't such a good idea. "Relax Savannah, it was a joke," he said, still grinning.
"Ha. Ha. Ha. Very funny," I said sarcastically, but I failed to stop myself from smiling. There he goes again with that charm again.
"That's better. Wanted to see you smile and chill out a little."
The road ended at a high, closed, Iron Gate. The gate hung off two massive stone pillars, braking the gate from the fence that was just as high and disappeared in to trees on either side of the driveway. I couldn't see more than a hundred meters of the driveway before it was swallowed by more trees. "Lots of trees around here," I thought out loud.
"Really good for privacy," he answered me.
He rolled down his window to speak into the intercom on the side of one of the stone pillars. A deep, growling voice sounded over the static of the speaker, "Lycaon, who is that with you?"
"She is my guest, Frost. Could you please open the gate," said Cain, leaning towards the intercom.
"Can we trust her?" asked the deep voice of Frost.
"I insure you, she is no threat to us," replied Cain, his smile wilted at the corners a little. Ooo, is someone getting shirty? I probably would if someone was second guessing my judgment, but that is just me.
"Yes Lycaon," said Frost. Obviously, he disapproved. The large iron gates opened silently. Someone must oil them regularly.
We followed the sheltered driveway, to a large clearing stretching out before a very large medieval manor house that stood in all its glory. High arched stained glass windows sat in the arches of stone walls, with bushes nestled under the lower windows. The manor was made of three sections, the main body had two smaller buildings that winged off on either side, all with A-frame roofing with shingle tiles. The steps at the front of the main building lead up to an archway where a large iron door stood.
The gardens, filled with roses and forget-me-nots, framed the driveway that wound around to the front of the steps. A short, slender man dressed all in black stood at the base of the stairs. The strain of the sleeves of his t-shirt, showed that he wasn't too slender. He had a fair bit of lean muscle tone, which showed me that he worked out often. His hair was cropped short at the sides and back. The top of it was styled in a stylized comb over and was the colour of pale sliver, almost white. His thick, but groomed, sliver eyebrows harden his clean shaven baby face. His youthful and handsome face was a pleasant surprise. Someone that young shouldn't have grey hair like that. If I didn't have Cain to compare him to, I would say he was very beautiful. But surely he can't be the owner of the voice from the intercom. Though I do instantly think 'Frost' when I look at him.
