The night swirled with menace, and Christine dragged Raoul to the rooftop, where she thought they'd be "safe". Little did either of the two numbskulls know; a shadow of infinite blackness, and sudden sorrow, followed their every move; moving when they moved, stopping when they stopped. When Christine and the young, long-haired, viscount reached the roof, Christine looked around the roof furtively. If she had looked BEHIND her, she would have noticed the shadow climb silently up the angel statue. There it stood, waiting, knowing heartbreak would come soon.

"Why have you brought us here? We must return!" Raoul sang

Christine grasped her hands together, "Don't take me back there! He'll kill me!" She looked frightened, and wrung her hands before continuing,

"His eyes will find me there—Those eyes that burn!"

"Christine, don't say that—!" "And if he has to kill a thousand men...."

"Forget this waking nightmare!"

"The Phantom of the Opera will kill...."

"This Phantom is a fable, believe me!"

Christine ignored him,

"And kill again!"

"Believe me, there Is No Phantom of the Opera!"

Christine made a whimpering noise, and wrung her poor, terrified, shaking hands. She ran her fingers through her tousled hair.

Behind them, unnoticed, the Shadow made a soft, hurt noise, and one of sympathy. Why the Shadow endured this betrayal, no one knows. But it stayed, a masochist.

"My god, who is this man," Christine cried.

"My god who is this man?" Raoul echoed, trying to place a hand on Christine's shoulder.

"Who hunts to kill...?"

"Who is this mask of death...?"

"I can't escape from him,"

"Whose is this voice you hear..?"

"I never will...!"

"With every breath...?"

They drew closer to each other, and started a tortured duet,

"And in this labyrinth,

Where night is blind...!

The Phantom of the Opera is there....

Inside your/my mind...!"

Raoul sighed, trying to get through to Christine, and placed a hand on her shoulder,

"There is no Phantom of the Opera!"

Christine glared at him, as behind her—unnoticed—the Shadow hissed with malevolence.

"Raoul, I've been there.......!

To his world of unending night.......

To his world where daylight

dissolves into darkness...

Darkness..........!"

She paused, then continued,

"Raoul, I've seen him....!

Can I ever forget that sight......?

Can I ever escape from that face,
