A little boy with dark hair, no older than eight, peered over a moss-covered stone wall. He gripped the rough surface like a ladder, his eyes scanning the forbidden area beyond. More than anything, he was on the lookout for any adult who might catch him.
After confirming that no prying eyes were in sight, his resolved to climb over the walls solidified. With a burst of determination, he clambered up, only for his foot to slip as he reached the top, sending him tumbling to the other side.
He let out a small shriek as he fell, landing awkwardly on his back and knocking the breath from his lungs. For a moment, he laid there, staring up at the sky, which was paint in shades of purple and pink as the sun began to set. A memory of his mother's voice echo in his mind, reminding him to be home before dark.
The thought sparked a rush of urgency. Adrenaline surging through him, propel him to sit up. He shifted his face from the sky to take in his surroundings for the first time.
He found himself in a magnificent garden, bursting with colorful flowers of every kind. A sizable blonde shimmer nearby, it's surface rippling as the fish darted gracefully beneath the water, reflecting the hues of the setting sun. The vibrant colors of the sky illuminated the hidden paradise, leaving the boy in utter awe. Never had he seen such a breathtaking place. The closest comparison lay in the embroidered patterns and landscapes depicted on lavish garments of the snobby nobles he often avoided. In that moment, he felt the thrill of discovery and allure of this secret world.
Again, his mother's voice prickled in his ears from the back of his mind. Her words promising punishment for coming home passed curfew. But the image of her worried frown in his mind was the real cause of his second burst of urgency. His thoughts propelling him forward towards the true reason he came here to this forbidden garden. I have to hurry. Mother will be upset if I come home late.
The boy's purpose for climbing the wall was simple, and some might even say stupid. It was to find a certain flower, his mother's favorite flower to be precise. His mother loves flowers, she always prattles on about flowers and their meanings. He has never met any other person who loves flowers as much as she does. So when the boy heard that the lord of the town had put in a garden with all types of exotic flowers, he knew he simply had to get one for his mother.
The boy thought it would make her happy. The only problem being blatantly obvious, that this said garden was on the lord's private property. The boy knew that if he was caught there would be hell to pay, for his family from the lord and for his bottom from the hard beating from his father. Just thinking about it made the boy's rump sore. But to him, it was worth the risk.
The boy quietly crept through the garden, his hands gently sifting through the flowers as he search for a specific one. The boy was mindful of all his movements, careful to leave no trace evidence. As he searched, the boy's thoughts began to drift a bit. He's heard the stories of the lord and his son. How the young master was diagnosed with an incurable disease from a young age, and how this same disease turned the once sweet child into the cruel boy he became known as. He's heard of the cruelty the young master brings, not only to the servants but to his own father too.
The boy couldn't fathom such cruelty, especially towards one's own father. But who was he to judge. The boy was smart for someone his age and he knew how incredibly fortunate he was to have such loving parents.
Through his prattling, the boy had spotted what he came for. A pretty flower for sure, with the tips of it's petals a deep purple color fading to white closer towards the center. It was like looking at the starry night sky, which most be how it got it's name. This was his mother's favorite flower, a type of clematis flowers known as the Violet Star-gazer. He could now see why his mother loved it so much, it was beautiful.
