Hinata Shoyo x Kageyama Tobio

Mild spoilers for the manga! Please don't read unless you are okay with that!

"I'm here."

"You're here."

..

When you’re young, you’re warned to never look into the sun for too long, or else you’ll go blind.

But when Tobio was young, his grandfather told him nothing of the sort.

“Tobio, when you meet that somebody who’s even better than you, they’ll be like the sun. You’ll want nothing more than to shine brighter than them, but you’ll end up burning yourself out, and you’ll see nothing more than darkness. That’s why…”

“...you have to keep facing the sun, so you will never see shadows,” he murmured to himself. His chin was planted on his hand, as his thoughts made his way past his lips.

The music in the background of the American inspired diner they occupied was intruding to his mind, but the team was having fun messing around, but Tanaka and Nishinoya were threatening to get them kicked out any second now. Kageyama opted out of the shenanigans by sitting and ordering a few milkshakes, having finished three in the time they were there.

“What was that, Tobio?” The ginger questioned, tilting his head in confusion. He was sipping the juice that sat next to him, setting it down when he realized Kageyama wasn’t paying attention to his words.

If he were going to be honest, he forgot Hinata sat in front of him a couple minutes ago. He joined him after claiming that he ‘looked too lonely on a special day,’ and could he really protest? “Nothing, just thinking,”

“Kageyama Tobio, thinking? I think I’m dreaming,” said Hinata, laughing when Tobio scowled at him. Scowled at him because his laughter sounded like a song he would replay over and over. “Thinking ‘bout what though?”

“My grandfather,” he replied, drinking the milkshake in front of him.

He didn’t even hesitate, which Kageyama appreciated. “Did you wanna talk about it?”

Hinata has always known about his family, and that much has been obvious. He knows very well that Hinata was more than open to hearing of his ‘issues,’ if he can call them that. But he also knew that his friend didn’t realize his increasing attachment to him, even after losing his grandfather. The sudden distance between him and his family members placed an involuntary barrier that he never realized was there.

His life just seemed too full of darkness, where nothing deemed him worthy of any light to present a future. He continued backing up into a corner, a corner where his worst enemy could keep him imprisoned in. The cape he wore as a reigning king cut into his skin, and the crown blinded him for too long. He thought that his foe was the team that held him back, but looking into the abyss, he found himself.

He was his worst foe, holding him back. The self loathing part of him was always lingering, striking him down. But when Hinata came blasting into his life unexpectedly, it was something that he couldn’t ignore. It seemed that, even for him, life had its gleams of sunshine. Those gleams of sunshine he began to abhor were the very ones that saved him in the end.

“I’m okay,” he hummed.

‘I was also thinking about you,’ was what he also wanted to say, but the words never came out.
