Chapter 1 - New lab partner

Liz slammed her locker and hurried to class. She had to get to class before the bell rang.

I can't get another tardy slip, she thought.

She passed her friends in the hallway and gave quick waves to them while they asked, “Where's the fire?”

Finally, she reached her class just as the bell rang. She felt relieved and went to her usual lab table next to her best friends, Charlie aka Charlotte, who has dark brown hair with cat green eyes.

“Looks like you made it. This time,” said Miss Carter, her chemistry teacher.

Liz smiled her sweetest smile and said, “Sorry 'cher. I will be earlier next time.”

Miss Carter accepted the apology. After all, she is a cheerleader with long, silky blond hair and crystal blue eyes. Who wouldn't like her smile?

Miss Carter cleared her throat and said, “Okay class. I've seen your results and have decided to pair you guys up according to your results,”

The class groaned but she put her hand up to signify silence and continued, “It will be like this, a good student with a poor student. It's also known as a tutoring system so that the poorer one may get help and guidance. Hopefully, it'll improve your grade by the end of the semester,” she paused, “I have the list here and we will follow this until the end of your term. No bargaining or exchanging of partners.”

Liz hoped that she will get Charlie as her partner as she is good at chemistry. Not some loser or geek or nerd. She closed her eyes and prayed.

“Charlotte Ryan and Timothy Lee, Jason Drew and Jasmine Parker...”

Miss Carter kept on calling out the names until Liz finally heard hers, “Last but not least, Elizabeth Marin and Drake Jacobson.”

Drake Jacobson?!?!!??! Seriously?! The nerd that has a crush on me since who knows when?! OMG!!!, she thought furiously.

Drake shifted next to the seat next to her and smiled.

He's actually not half bad, with blue eyes and shaggy dark brown hair, she thought.

Liz realised what she was thinking and shook it away. She decided that she was going to bargain with Miss Carter and she is going to her her to change her mind.

I'll sweet talk her and I'll get Charlie to be my partner, Liz thought.

While Miss Carter was explaining about how the better student will tutor the weaker students, Liz was thinking about the correct words to convince Miss Carter.

The bell rang and she jumped off her seat, rushing to the teacher's table.

Miss Carter raised her head and asked, “Yes Elizabeth? Having a problem with the tutoring system?”

Liz was surprised that Miss Carter knew exactly what she wanted to ask. She nodded.

“Well, I'm sorry. Like I said earlier, no bargaining or exchanges. And that's final.”

“But, Miss Carter, I just want to exchange with Timothy so that I can be with Charlotte. I won't talk to her all the time. She'll be tutoring me. Please, Miss Carter. I promise. I'll really study with her as my partner.” Liz bargained. “I'll work better with her compared to anyone else in the class. You'll see a faster progress.”

She considered it for a moment and Liz could see it in her face. In the end, she just said, “I'm sorry Elizabeth. I know you're trying and being honest but I just can't change your partner. It wouldn't be fair to others. Don't you think so? But, if your results improve, I promise that Charlotte will be your next partner. Okay? I hope you understand.”

With that, Liz knew that that was final and gave up. She said, “Okay. I understand. Thank you Miss Carter.”

She went out of the class and saw Charlie waiting for her, “Did it work out?” she asked eagerly.

Liz just groaned as a response and Charlie knew it didn't.

Now I'm stuck with a nerd for the next three months. Great. Perfect. Awesome, Liz thought grumpily.
