༻✦༺ ༻✧༺ ༻✦༺I slipped into the Potions classroom quietly, peering around it and all its emptiness, with the exception of Professor Sulghorn, who was bent over a steaming cauldron of thick potion, muttering to himself.
"Professor?"
His shiny, bald head lifted up so suddenly that I was worried his neck would snap.
"Oh!" he said, his eyebrows raised. "(Y/N)! What do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"
I opened my dry mouth, trying to find the correct words to use. "Um, I had a question. About Potions."
"Well, you came to the right professor," he chuckled. "What can I help you with?"
"Is there, uh, a potion that can grant a user, courage? Like," I paused, shifting uncomfortably, "like, give someone the courage they need to do something?"
It was an odd request, and the face that Slughorn made proved it so. "What are you planning to do with this potion?"
"Well, I was planning to join the Slytherin Quidditch team, and it's making me a bit mad, thinking about it," I replied, a bit too quickly.
This, of course, was a lie. I had no interest in joining the stupid Quidditch team. I was looking for a 'courage enhancing potion' for a special task I had been awarded by the Dark Lord himself, on the day I was made a Death Eater.
Me and my ex, Draco Malfoy, had been given a most difficult task.
We were to fix up the Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement to let Death Eaters into Hogwarts. After that, one of us would have to kill Dumbledore.
I wasn't too fond of Draco, but I was fond of him enough to kill the old Headmaster instead of him.
I knew that Draco wasn't the type of guy to go and murder someone. Neither was I, but I was certainly more comfortable with the idea of it.
Slughorn's confused expression melted into a gracious smile. "Pre-game jitters. Quite common. Unfortunately, I don't know of a safe potion to grant someone courage, but I do know one that grants the drinker, luck."
He straightened his back and grinned at me from across the room. "Luck?" I asked, walking a little further into the classroom, approaching the professor.
"Of course! Felix Felicis!" Slughorn bellowed, directing my attention towards a small bowl of golden liquid. "Once you drink it, you can't go wrong! A perfect day, you'll have," he said proudly gazing into the bottle as if it was a child of his.
"So, if I drink that, I'd be able to achieve anything?" I asked eagerly, as Slughorn swiped the vial out of my reach.
"Yes. But unfortunately, I cannot give this to you. This will be used as a reward for the best brewed potion in the next Potions class."
Almost exactly after those words had left his mouth, Malfoy and his cronies burst into the classroom, loud laughter echoing against the walls.
"Welcome, boys!" Slughorn greeted them, showing them a toothy grin from under his large moustache. "You're awfully early, just like Carter, here."
Draco's face screwed up into a concerned look when he saw me standing awkwardly beside the new Potions professor.
"What are you doing here so early?" he hissed into my ear as we were grabbing supplies off the shelfs, preparing for class.
"It shouldn't matter to you," I muttered back. "That's my business."
"And it's also my business. We have to work together, whether you like it or not, and I need to know if I can trust you," he snarled, but put a hand on my shoulder gently.
