I stepped down from the elaborately decorated carriage, with as much grace as I could summon. The kingdom of Vesuvia was elegant, but I was even more so.

I straightened my jacket, ran a hand through my short, chestnut coloured hair, while examining my surroundings.

The glorious sun beat down on me, smoking me alive in my all-black attire. I hadn't expected such pleasant weather, since back home it rained quite a bit this time of year. I quite enjoyed it.

"Welcome!" In a red flurry, a short girl, around the age of twenty or so, burst out of the giant doors of the Vesuvian palace, waving her hands at me wildly.

"Hello," I replied calmly, giving her a small smile.

"You must be the Countess' cousin, Lyric!" The red head shook my hand vigorously, her wide smile widening.

I nodded, letting my eyes wander from her, to the armoured guards around us, to the intricate topiary and koi ponds. "Yes, that is me," I said, withdrawing my hand from the friendly shake.

"I'm Portia, the Countess' head servant! It's wonderful to properly meet you," she chirped.

Portia's attitude was beyond friendly, and it was no wonder she was head servant. She seemed neat and orderly, sweet and helpful, but able to give out stern orders when needed. I valued people like that back home.

"Let me take your bag," Portia chimed, taming my bag from my hand, and gestures for me to follow her into the palace.

The palace was beautiful. The marble walls seemed to glow with beautiful intricate designs, and ornate rugs covered the waxed floors, which reflected the gorgeous chandeliers that hung overhead.

"This place is pristine," I marveled, craning my neck to examine the lights above. "You've done an amazing job taking care of this place."

Portia blushed from the flattery. "Well, I certainly couldn't have done it with my trusty staff."

We stopped at a large, overly decorated door, but before opening it, Portia took a step in front of me, giving me a worried look.

"Okay," she sighed, "so I never actually told the Countess you were coming, it's sort of a surprise."

"Yes, I was quite confused when I heard that my cousin was inviting me to come visit," I said quietly, giving her a reassuring smile. "We aren't on very good terms."

"See, I was hoping to get you two to bond, or build your relationship back up," Portia shrugged, "since I was able to get the Countess to bond with her close family, I was hoping to help her out a bit more!"

I bit my tongue. I was a bit skeptical on the way here, but I certainly wasn't prepared to meet Nadia again as a surprise. I hadn't prepared for this.

But I was a Caln, and I had to be able to adapt to changes in my life.

"You're a good person, Portia," I told her, as she pushed the doors open, to reveal a glowing sunroom.

Golden rays of sunlight beat down on the gorgeous furniture that sat scattered around the room. The sound of a pleasant tune being played on an antique piano echoed through the room, resonating off the glass walls.

Incredible botany crowded the bottom of the walls outside, and you could see a pleasant view of a happy forest out of them.

"Lyric?"

The piano music halted, and I twisted to my left to see Nadia seated on a piano stool, her hands still rested on the keys, as she gawked at me. Shock didn't look so good on her.
