The next morning we were fully prepared and waited patiently for the family to leave their home at precisely the same time as they had on the previous days. As soon as they had left, we went round the back of the house to find a way in. Jane used a tool to open the back door. We crept in nervously at first until we were certain it was empty. The house was untidy: it had piles of clothes and shoes everywhere; it seemed like the owners did not have time to clear up as they were too busy with something else.

After hours of searching the house for any clues, we decided to head back to my apartment empty handed as it was already 3:00pm. We thought that if we hadn’t found anything by now, then we probably would never find any evidence. We trudged back to the rear door but Jane tripped over a dirty rug, revealing a loose piece of floorboard. Thinking it was just due to the age of the house, we started to pull the rug back over the wood but I glimpsed something down underneath the flooring.
