Knock, knock.

“Enter,” Mew called out, eyes still focused on the reports in front of him.

The door creaked open slowly.

“Good afternoon, Mew.”

That voice—it was warm, fatherly. Mew looked up and immediately stood.

“Good morning, Boss!”

The older man sighed, shaking his head.

“How many times do I have to tell you, Mew? Don’t call me that. Call me Por. You’re like a son to me. I love you, kid. No more of this ‘Boss’ nonsense.”

Mew smiled faintly. “Okay... Por. Sorry.”

Por nodded approvingly, then sat across from him. “I haven’t seen Gulf in a while. I’ve tried calling, but he doesn’t answer. Do you think… could you reach out? Ask him to come for dinner? Just to see that he’s okay?”

“I’ll try right now,” Mew replied.

He dialed Gulf’s number.

Ring... Ring... Ring...

We’re sorry, the person you are trying to reach is unavailable. Please leave a message after the tone.

Mew’s heart sank.

Por noticed. “He’s not answering?”

Mew shook his head. “I’ve been trying too…”

A strange, cold feeling began to rise in his chest.

“…Por, can I go home? I think… I think something might be wrong.”

Por’s smile faded. “What happened, Mew?”

“I can’t explain yet. It’s something Gulf needs to tell you himself. But please—let me go to him.”

Por studied his face, and after a moment, nodded. “Go. And Mew… if it’s serious, you call me.”

“I will.”

Mew left in a blur of movement. He slammed the door behind him, rushed home, and opened the front door with trembling hands.

The house was silent.

Empty.

Cold.

“Gulf?!”

He searched every room. The air felt wrong.

Mew knew this kind of silence. The kind that lingered after someone had already decided to give up.

He pulled out his phone again, praying.

One call. Two. Three—

On the sixth attempt, someone picked up.

“WHERE ARE YOU, N’GULF?!”

“…Nong…”

Mew froze.

That wasn’t Gulf.

“P’Shine…?”

“I’m sorry, Nong…”

Mew’s stomach dropped.

Shine always apologized like that—like he’d already decided he was a mistake.

“Where are you?” Mew whispered. “Please, tell me. I’ll come to you. I’ll be there.”

“Nong… it’s such a beautiful day. The sky’s clear. The air feels light. Perfect day to die, don’t you think? Maybe then… I’ll finally pay for everything I’ve done.”
