Chapter 3
The bus dropped us a block away from the bar. The night was cold and dark. There was a sketchy man on the other side of the street probably dealing drugs. My stomach was in a knot. I knew this was a mistake. I looked up the sky was full of stars trillions of them everywhere. Which was very odd, because there were rarely any clear skies in winter. I thought of all the people looking at the starts right now. How their lives where. My mother used to tell me, 'People look at the stars for answers when they cannot find themselves.'
I believe they are either looking for something which they have lost. But never understood how stars can give you answers.
Lola and I started walking towards the bar, I didn't know if Lola knew that half of my Dad's coworkers go here to drink. If they see me I'm in a whole lot of trouble. I hope they are probably too drunk to recognize me
Lola stared at me, "Babe, you haven't said a word the whole ride here. Are you scared or something? Trust me you'll like it." Trust. Why when Lola says it I don't believe her.
"No, I'm not scared. I'm all in. I told you already."
"Okay, okay," Lola puts her hands up in retreat.
I laughed, "So how are we doing this?"
"Well, I heard from Dillon that Samantha rented the whole bar out for her 21st birthday. So we'll just act as we belong there. We'll wish Happy birthday to Samantha and hit the open bar and dance! Plus I heard they are were going to be cute college guys there," Lola danced crazily around the street. She grabbed my hand and made me dance with her.
"Wait, Dillon !?" I yelled. I dropped her hand. "Are you still talking to that jerk. Didn't he cheat on you with that girl, Audrey."
"No, he didn't," Lola said all defensive. "That slut jumped him."
"You're blind," I replied.
"I love him, May. What am I supposed to do?" she sighed.
"Dump him," I said
"I can't," Lola sat on the cold concrete sidewalk. "What if he doesn't come back."
"He's lost," I sat right next to her.
"You suck," she puts her head on my shoulder.
"I know," I said. We both started to laugh. Lola looked at me and smiled. Then she looked at my outfit up and down. She looked at me confused.
"What in the world are you wearing?" she asked.
"Clothes," I said.
"Are you sure? Those look like rags. We need to get you a dress. You can't got to the party looking like this." she said.
"How," I asked.
She gave me her Chesire-like smile. I knew she was up to no good. She grabbed me by the hand and pulled me towards the some stores near the end of the street. There was small corner store, A consignment store, and a Chinese restaurant. The food smelled so good. I think my mouth was watering. Lola pulled me in the consignment store. I remember this store my Mom and Dad were still together, she would bring my old clothes here so I can buy new ones. My Mom knew how much I miss her. She use to be smart, kind and caring. Now all she does is be on her phone calling and texting her boss. She became too absorbed in work. She even forgot Max's birthday.
"Look over there see that dress," Lola pointed at a dress that was near the dressing rooms. It was gorgeous. It was short and red it was perfect for a night out.
"How are you planning on buying it? We didn't bring no money," I whispered.
"Who said anything about paying for the dress?" she said evilly.
"You don't mean stealing it?" I shouted.
"Hush, What type of person do you think I am? I'm going to swap it with this one. She pulls one of her old dresses. I sighed in relief. She starts to laugh. We swapped the dress and I went to the dressing room to put it on. It fitted perfectly. I came out of the dressing room feeling beautiful.
"Wow," Lola said surprised. "Where have you been hiding those curves?"
"I don't know," I laughed.
"Well put your jacket on. I have a feeling we heading towards a marvelous night," she said with a funny accent. I laughed, I put on my jacket and we headed towards the bar.
***********
When we got to the bar it was pack. I think the whole entire town was invited. I hated being so small. Every step I take there was either an armpit or boobs in my face. It was horrible. The music was too loud, I thought I was going deaf. The lights were dim, there were green and blue lights going off everywhere. The only reason why I wasn't lost is that I was holding tight onto Lola's hand. I looked around, there were many couples. Some were hardcore making out. Was it weird that I was starring? I always wondered how would it feel to be kissed. Yes. I know it's dorkish. I'm eighteen and I haven't been kissed. Good thing I put it on my list. Lola turned around and said something but I couldn't make it out.
"What?," I shouted. She mouthed something but I still couldn't hear. I gave her a confused look. Lola rolled her eyes and shouted in my ear, "Dillon is over there, I'm going to say hi."
"Fine," I said with no enthusiasm at all. Lola pointed at where they standing. I saw Dillon, tall, dirty blonde hair, green eyes. He was cute but a player. He was talking to one of his jerk friends. Crap it's Damien. I pulled back Lola's hand. She turned around, "What's wrong babe?" she shouted. I pointed to Damien, she couldn't see him that well, but when she did she understood.
She came close to my ear, "Wait for me at the bar I'll meet you there." Lola gestured towards the left. I turned around and saw the open bar, I nodded. She let go of my hand and went off to meet Dillon. I went to the bar and sat on one of the chairs. It was swinging chair, so kept swinging left and right. A few minutes had gone and Lola hasn't returned. I started to get worry. I looked around to see if I can see her. She disappeared. I checked my phone to see if I got any message. None. It was already 11:00 p.m. I kept looking around, that's when the cute bartender interrupted my search.
"Waiting for somebody?" he asked with a flashing smile. He looked about 20. He was tall, and fit, brown dark eyes. He was wearing a white fancy short, with a black fancy vest, with a red tie.
"Yes, my friend." I replied.
"Well, How about a drink while you wait?" he asked.
"No, I'll wait for my friend to come," I said.
"C'mon chill. A beautiful girl should be enjoying herself! You look like you really need a drink," he said.
"How about drinks?" I suggested.
"I know just what you need," he started filling up tequila shots and placing them on a platter. He placed neatly sliced yellow lemons on top of each shot.
"Here you go," he placed the platter next to me.
"That's a lot of alcohol," I said with my eyes wide open.
"It'll make all your worries go away," he suggested.
"Really?" I asked.
"Really," he assured.
I took my first tequila shot glass and quickly drank it all. Now I cross twelve off my list, was my first thought. When the tequila went down my throat, it was like I was swallowing fire. I felt my face get hot.
"Now suck on the lemon," the bartender suggested. I took the lemon and sucked up all the juice. So sour.
"Urgh," I shook my head.
"The first one is always the hardest. Don't worry it'll get better," the bartender said.
I went on to my second, third, fourth until I got to my tenth. My whole world is spinning. I started to regret my first drink.
