Chapter 6
I was woken up by the sunlight peeking through the window. It blinded me. I turned my back on the window and closed my eyes. Then I smelled something familiar. I took another whiff and another. I know this smell, I just couldn't put it into words. My eyes automatically lashed right open. I sat up straight. I had a killer headache. My body wanted to go back to bed, but I need to find out where I am. I looked around, I wasn't in my room. The room's color was gray and it's too clean to be mine. Plus, there are pictures of motorcycles everywhere and blueprints for motorcycles. There's a desk at the far end of the room. On top of the desk, there's a typewriter with some paper and a pencil. Then I saw the chair. On the chair, there was a navy blue plaid sweater. Memory flashes hit me, of last night. I remember there was a lot of drinking involved, Lola leaving me alone the bar, Damien, a bartender I think, and I remembered a piggyback ride. I looked back at the sweater, and then it hit me.
"Good morning," I recognized Josh's voice. I turned around. Josh was leaning against the door. Oh dear god, he's attractive. He looks recently showered, and his clothes seem carefully put together. His T-shirts and jeans fit, he wears the right colors, the right shoes, the right belt. It's subtle. But he never just throws something on. Josh glances around taking everything in. This must be strange for him. A girl he just meet a couple of hours ago in his bed.
It's strange for me too.
"Good morning," I replied. I looked down to see if I was dressed okay. I still had the dress Lola got for me, it had a few tears here and there, but at least it was still intact. I removed all of the covers off my body and got up. I walked towards him, trying to avoid any visual contact. I don't know what to say. How do you start a conversation with the boy, you can barely remember talking to last night or staying the night with?
"About, last night," we both said at the same time. We stared at each other. My heart was beating so fast. My stomach seemed to be flipping, but I think that's the hangover talking. I had to raise up my head a little to see his eyes, and he had to lower his head to see mine. We both were comfortable but uncomfortable at the same time. Is that even possible? His head was cocked to left, only just a bit. I took a step closer, I'm drawn to him. His look was happy and nervous, he breathed out a long breath. I took a step closer. He was looking at my lips and me at his. Is this going to be my first kiss? Then suddenly there was a beeping noise coming from outside. WHY? Out of all the moment, why this one? I look towards the window.
"What's that?" I asked.
"I don't know," Josh dropped his shoulders. "Probably a car alarm went off."
"Perfect timing," he said underneath his breath
"What?" I asked when I heard perfectly what he said.
"Nothing," he said shaking his head.
I walked slowly towards the window, and to my surprise, I was staring at my house. I can see my window from here. Good thing I had my curtains covering the window, blocking the view inside of my messy room. Our house was really old. It has a big backyard surrounded by bushes. We had a white picket fence covering only the front part of the house. There was a little gap between the bushes and the fence. So I can easily cross to my house, through Josh's backyard. It looked like it rain because the concrete and the grass was wet and the snow was gone. I hate April's bipolar weather. Snow, rain, and then sun. I saw my dad, come out from the back doors in is night PJs. CRAP. MY DAD. I rushed to Josh's bed moving all the pillows and covers looking for my phone.
"What's wrong?" Josh looks at me while I destroy his bed.
"My phone! I need to find my phone," I exclaimed.
"It's in your jacket," he said. Josh walked to his closet and grabbed my green jacket. He takes it out of the close hanger and hands my jacket to me. "Left pocket," he said.
"Thanks," I smiled at him. I dig into my pocket, my phone was there. Thank god. I check it, three missed calls and five text messages. I'm dead. I had only one missed call from Lola and all the text messages were from her, but I'll talk to her later. I had 2 missed calls from my Dad. I send him a message saying, 'I'll be home in a few.' My dad replied instantly, 'Okay, be safe.' I sighed in relief. I guess he didn't suspect anything.
"Everything okay," Josh asked. I totally forgot for a second where I was.
"Yeah," I replied. "My dad, thinks I'm sleeping at Lola's. I just wanted to make sure he kept thinking that." I sat on his bed and he sat beside me.
"Oh," he said. "Here drink this," Josh handed me a drink of something. The drink looked orangey yellow. It smelled like rotten eggs.
"What's that?" I backed away from him. "It smells deadly."
"It's a hangover cure," he explained. "It'll make your headache and that nasty breath of yours go away."
I covered my mouth in embarrassment, "Nope, I'm not drinking that nasty thing."
"So he doesn't know about the bar? It would be a shame if he gets an anonymous tip saying his daughter was involved with underage drinking," he teased.
"You wouldn't," I said.
"Try me," he handed me the drink.
I took it, "The whole entire thing?"
"To the last drop," he said.
"Bottoms up," I teased. Josh smiled. I pinched my nose and gulped it all up to the very last drop.
"There was that so hard," he said in a baby voice. I put the glass on top of the drawer and I turned around.
"You suck," I threw a pillow at him. He was so surprised he jumped and fell off the bed. I started to laugh so hard.
"You have a lot of energy for someone with a hangover," he teased. Josh grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at me. We started to have a pillow fight, I wanted this moment to last forever. I need to get home before my dad suspects anything.
"I surrender," I said out of breath. I put my hands up.
"That quick?! I thought you would put more of a fight," he said mocking me.
"Well, I have to go home. I need to go to my Mother's," I explained.
"Oh, you visit her?" he asked.
"Yeah, once and in while she wants to spend time with my brother and me." I started to put my jacket on. Josh went to the corner of his room and got my boots.
"Here," he said. Extending his arm to give them to me.
"Thanks," I said. Taking my boot in my hands, I smiled at him. He ran his hand through his hair and smiled ever so sweetly.
"By the way," I said. " You need to fill me in with on what happened last night and how I ended up in your bed," I said while heading out his bedroom door. His face turned bright red.
"Yeah," he managed to say, "and maybe finally you can try tea."
"Yeah," I said, "We're neighbors so we'll be seeing a lot of each other."
"Really?" I can sense some excitement from his voice.
"Yeah, that's my room window. It's right across yours," I said pointing towards outside, "See you, okay?" I start walking towards the door.
"Until next time," he said. We stared at each other, holding each other's gaze.
"Next time," I said. I walked down the stairs.
I turned around to see if he was going to watch me leave. In a second Josh's head appeared, he waved at me, and I waved back. I walked towards his front door and slowly I turned the knob. I didn't want this moment to end. But soon I was outside. I was walking towards my house.
