Red Sole stared up at the ceiling. She and Omega were having their first-ever sleepover together, because, as Red Sole put it, "It's what best friends do!" Omega couldn't exactly argue against the fact they were best friends, but it didn't stop her from thinking that the whole ordeal was childish. Still, she relented, mostly because she didn't have anything better to do. She had gotten up, presumably to go use the bathroom. It was the only time she had woken up that night, though Red Sole had been up for a while, thinking.
She had been feeling strange around Omega lately, and she couldn't place her finger on it. Earlier that day, the stoic inkling had complimented Red Sole after a series of Ranked Battles.
"Hey, good job out there today. You were amazing!" Omega had said.
Red Sole grinned and blushed hard. She always felt a little flustered getting a compliment, but she very rarely blushed. That was nothing, however, compared to how she felt the day before. She and Omega were fighting side by side during a Ranked Battle, and their arms had brushed together. Red Sole had blushed yet again, and her hands began to sweat so much, she thought that she would lose grip of her Bloblobber. Any time they sat next to each other, Red Sole felt like she was going to throw up a bit. She was so confused! She wasn't sick or anything!
Yet, every time Red Sole reflected on her symptoms, they felt very familiar. Sweaty hands, blushing, upset stomach... that particular combination seemed so common. She herself had never felt this way, but she swore that other people had. She lied awake, reflecting quietly...
And then it hit her.

Omega leaned on the sink, lost in thought - very odd for the normally stoic inkling. Then again, everything had been odd lately, as if the world had both grown brighter and more confusing at the same time.
This had all started recently, after really getting to know Red Sole. When they first met, it was pretty awkward - the only thing the two of them appeared to have in common was that they both identified as female, and they were both X-Rank. Other than that, the two of them could not have been any more different. From energy levels and what they thought of fashion, it was astounding that the two of them learned to get along at all. They never argued, per say, though they didn't start talking much until recently.
Omega was already feeling close to Red Sole. There was just something about her that stuck. Maybe her being so opposite brought a sort of balance to Omega, or maybe she was just that charming. She was a rather likeable inkling, once you got to know her. It hurt Omega a little whenever she saw other inklings give Red Sole weird, judgmental, and sometimes frightened looks. Recently, she had started giving her little compliments, and while they were small, they were genuine. She also noticed feeling unreasonably shy aroundIt didn't make a whole lot of sense to her, though. Red Sole was just another inkling! Why did she care so much about her?
Well, she thought as she washed her hands, I guess she isn't "just another inkling." But, why is that?
And then it hit her.

"I have a crush on Omega."
Red Sole was upright in bed, gripping her blanket.
How could she have not realized before?! Then again, this was her first time having a crush on someone. Still, it made so much sense - the nervousness and shyness, the feeling like her heart was going to explode just thinking about her!
Red Sole took some deep breaths. OK, so this was her first crush. And it was on Omega. Stoic, rational, thought-she-was-mute-for-the-longest-time Omega. There was absolutely no way she liked her back. She might as well give up on it.
Despite this assumption, Red Sole could not stop her mind from drifting to what a life with Omega as her girlfriend would be like. Imagine going out on dates - shopping dates, ice cream dates, all that stuff - holding hands, hugging, maybe even kissing! Or what if they stood outside and gazed at the stars together? All of that sent shivers down Red Sole's spine. As she thought it over, she found herself whispering scenarios out loud.
"Imagine the look on everyone's faces if we told them we were dating! What if we won Inkopolis' cutest couple? Nah, that doesn't matter. Or what if we walked home together after a long day of Ranked Battle and Turf War? Wow! That would be so amazing! Now all I need to do is confess my love!"
Red Sole half-exclaimed this part before covering her mouth. A realization dawned on her.
What if Omega didn't like her back?
It was a very real possibility. Omega wasn't really one to fall in love or express emotion. There was very little chance of her actually liking Red Sole back.
And yet part of Red Sole believed that there was a chance. A small one, sure, but it was there. It'd be better to try than to live in regret of never confessing.
But how should she do that?
Should she pull Omega aside one day after Turf War and tell her, or would the pressure be too much? Or maybe she could wait until the moment she blurted it out and hope for the best... ooh! She could try to draw a heart around her in Turf War! ...Nah, that'd be too cheesy.
Red Sole rested her head in her hands, muttering, while a flustered Omega stood by the door.
"She likes me back," she whispered under her breath.
Not that this was unexpected, per say. She did see it coming, somehow. Still, it somewhat hurt her to know that Red Sole was struggling with all of this. Omega knew that she had to give more hints, or even confess herself.
That could wait a while, though.
When gentle snores came from the room, indicating that Red Sole was asleep again, Omega sneaked in and into bed before falling asleep herself, both of them dreaming about holding on to the other one...
