November 4 - Garret is dead. Past three days were the hardest for those of us who knew him well. Garret was taken when he was on night guard duty outside Dr. Neil's clinic. We found him or what remained of him, today in the forest. He was strung up on a dead pine tree, that monster... it used his guts to string him up on to a tree. It's almost as if it is mocking us! I can't get his smiling face out of my head, what am I to tell his wife? What about his daughter?

All of us are angry in the camp, Garret was the best of us and to see him like that, we can't take that and do nothing about it. For now we know that it hunts after the midnight and if we can fortify our defences and put some torches around to light the way. Maybe we can get through until the Doctor and I think of how to take this creature down. I just cannot afford to go down here, I have too many promises and too many lives to protect.

After Garret, we had to have something to defend ourselves with, so I had some of the younger chaps buy some knives from the blacksmith in town; while I swiped 3 rifles and some ammunition off of the governor's guards, just had to bribe the head honcho and we had a deal. We have also moved into a more secure house on the outskirts of town.

We buried Garret on a beautiful hill, but unfortunately without a coffin. It's not only us who lost someone, 2 children are missing from the main city. It's best that we deal with this menace before it gets to us. The mood of the party has quite obviously been dark but we all of seem to appreciate the sunlight more. It's too bad that the days are too short here.

But here is the most important information we got the other day; the mother of one of the children, a girl, that was taken, awoke, to find a shadowy figure inside the room crawling towards her daughter. This woman had, for the sake of protection kept a knife near her. So she took that knife and planted it deep inside the monster. But that didn't help, the figure hit woman on the head and she went out cold but as she passed out she saw the monster take her daughter and flee. As she came to, her daughter was gone and hence, she cried and wailed which brought all the town to her home.

This was a truly disheartening tale indeed but it revealed something vital to me. We saw that the monster did bleed when the woman stabbed her, it was black coloured blood. However, as we say back home,
"If it bleeds, it can be killed."
