1778-January 15- Writing in someone else's journal feels to me a breach in privacy but promises are made to be kept.It has been almost 20 days since Micheal departed for the mountain with the others. Nothing of note happened in those 20 days until today; Help came.
We had lost hope and were questioning why we decided to come to this godforsaken place when the servant of Mr. Ali came in through the door without knocking. We braced for bad tidings. But his face said other wise and when he caught his breath and spoke, he said, "Boats! Boats! British come to help us, they come in Boats! Up the river!" I asked him to calm down and tell me how many boats there were but he understood nothing. I then made it out to him in signs and asked the number of these boats and he held up 3 fingers. My heart sank.
This wasn't help. This was an extraction for our party, because of our privilege . Well it was good for us and every man was happy beyond measure but what about the people here? "Maybe we could send word of the happenings and get more army up here when we left", with that thought I persuaded my mind into not being guilty.
Some of the family members of our party are here too because of their concern. Regretfully, Mr. Garret's wife is here too, and with her Micheal's fiance, Ms. Agnes grey. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to see her when he comes back.
As for explaining to her why her future husband is not here when they've travelled so long to come and take us home. I let her read this journal. She was in disbelief. Poor soul!
And as for the reason I am writing all this down, that is because I want Micheal to read this and feel what he would have felt were he here when she arrived. She was wearing a light blue dress and over which was a white-grey fur coat, a hat with netted veil and simple yet elegant jewellery. I do not know what you are facing Michael, but know that it will be alright as long as you come back.
For now the soldiers who came to get us and the family members of the party will stay with us as the weather has taken a turn for the worse again. Garret's wife was.. well she was heartbroken when she heard about him. We, ofcourse did not tell her how he died. However I do positively believe that it was much better for her to come here and visit the hill where we buried him.
Hopefully next time Michael himself will write in this Journal.
