Benji had so many friends. Friends he'd see after school, friends he'd go to parties with.
He had friends to talk to in the morning, and a different set of friends to talk to at night.
He used to walk around school with his friends, his head held high and fist unclenched
But he noticed something different this year
He noticed his contact list got smaller
He noticed he rarely went out at night
He noticed he didn't get good morning texts anymore
He noticed that when he walked the halls of his school, it would no longer be surrounded by all of these people
He noticed his friends had moved on
And it destroyed him
He never knew what it was like to not have friends
To not have something to laugh at
Or to jokingly make fun of
He didn't know what it was like to not have constant inside jokes be used for everything
He didn't know what it was like to be alone
And of course he wasn't totally alone
He had Jorge
And he'd tell jorge whenever he felt like this
And Jorge would try and understand him, but he never had much friends from the start
So , now, as Benji looks around the crowded hall, he realized he had never felt more alone
His footsteps would echo in his mind
And his eyes would be focused on the ground
His fists would be clenched
His shoulders slumped and the weight of his body seemed to drag on as he walked to class
All of his friends went their separate ways
And they were all content and happy
They probably didn't even realize they had left each other
And as much as Benji tried to hide it
He couldn't
He missed them
All of them
But there goes a saying when you enter highschool
You join with all of your friends freshman year
Sophomore year a few disappear
Junior year you have a few left standing, the ones you always favored
Senior year there's that one friend, that maybe you didn't think you'd make it out of here with
Maybe that you thought didn't appreciate you and you didn't appreciate them
But they stand with you, and they care about you just as much as you do with them
So when Benji looked at jorge as he stood at the end of the stairs waiting for Benji to get there
Benji smiled
And ran down the stairs to hug him
Sure, Benji's only friend was his boyfriend
But at least he knows he loves him
And with jorge
Benji realized he would rather have him, over the twelve friends he had before him
And that's all that mattered
