previously in chapter five:
"and how long is 'a little late'?" a voice asked.
ava looked up from her phone and saw jake standing in front of her with a towel wrapped around him.
"the last time you said your dad was going to be a little late was when i saw you waiting at a bus stop at midnight," jake said.
"that was also a year ago," ava chuckled, but it didn't come out so enthusiastically.
"we're taking you to our house. c'mon," jake said, putting his hand out for ava to take.
—
"what are you talking about?" ava chuckled, "no you're not."jake sighed in response and folded his arms, giving ava the glare of the century.
"your glares don't work on me anymore," ava huffed.
"ava-" jake called out, changing is soft toned voice to a much deeper one.
"but that tone still does," ava replied, standing up.
jake would used to always use glares and change the tone of his voice around ava whenever it was necessary and clearly that hasn't changed.
"c'mon," jake said as he walked behind ava to mrs. shim's car.
ava, still being drenched by the rain, felt something being placed on her back, making her turn around.
"it was a towel," jake chuckled, "relax."
"no. you take it. you're going to catch a cold," ava denied, handing the towel back.
"and so are you."
"but you can't catch a cold because you have training."
"just take the towel and get in the car will you?"
ava let out a small laugh at the playful, yet cocky tone in jake's voice and did exactly what he said to do.
"mr. lee is running late, so i offered ava to come to our house. is that okay?" jake asked mrs. shim as he got in the car.
"of course it is," mrs. shim replied.
"ava, why don't you take the guest bedroom and use the shower in there. if you put your wet clothes in the washer, i'll wash and dry them for you," mrs. shim said as they walked into the shim's home.
"yes ma'am," ava replied, walking towards the room she remembered as the guest room from the previous times she's been there.
"woah! i-i'm so sorry!" ava exclaimed as soon as she opened the door and saw jake begin to remove his shirt.
(i know jake is still a minor, but i had to put it in for the story. i'm sorry if i made anyone uncomfortable by putting that)
mrs. shim approached ava with a chuckle, "we moved the rooms around."
"so i see," ava whispered.
"here's the guest room," mrs. shim said, opening the door to the guest room.
"thank you."
"of course sweetie."
entering the guest bedroom, ava took her time while showering as she also needed to give her clothes time to wash and dry as well, but she ended up showering faster than expected.
there were many towels in the cabinet, so ava took one to wrap around her hair and one to wrap around her body as she exited the bathroom and walked towards the door to the guest bedroom.
before ava could twist the doorknob open, there was a knock and she opened it, revealing jake in sweatpants and a flowy t-shirt with messy wet hair.
"uh my mom said that your clothes won't be done for a lot longer, so here's some clothes for you," jake said, handing her a folded stack of clothes, "my mom is coming with other stuff."
"thanks."
jake nodded and walked away for ava to shut the door, but open it again as mrs. shim appeared with a bag.
"these are brand new, so don't worry."
"alright," ava chuckled, "thank you mrs. shim."
"you got it hun."
ava changed and the clothes she was given turned out to be jake's. it was a hoodie and sweatpants, which were way too big for her so she rolled them up as much as she could.
the hoodie looked like a dress on ava and she couldn't help but notice the scent it had. it was jake's signature fresh smell that she very much loved.
she left the room and went to search for mrs. shim, but couldn't find anyone besides jake.
"u-uhm .. can you let me know where the hair dryer is?"
jake nodded and stood up from the couch, leading ava into the bathroom in his room where a hair dryer was plugged in.
"thank you," she called out as jake left the bathroom.
once she finished drying her hair, she left the bathroom to find a sleeping jake on his bed.
seeing that jake was lying on top of his comforters, ava went to the little chair in the corner of the room to take the blanket and put it over jake.
jake didn't seem to move, meaning he was deep asleep. ava remembered that jake was always a light sleeper, but seeing how he was oblivious to what was going around, ava realized that jake must be extremely tired.
she left the room and softly shut the door, turning around to see rosie standing there, making ava jump up.
"oh my!" ava quietly exclaimed, putting her hand on her heart.
"sorry for scaring you," rosie laughed, "but what were you .."
"oh, i was using jake's hair dryer," ava replied, understanding what rosie wanted to ask.
"ohh."
"but he's asleep, so try to be quiet if you're going in there. your brother looks really tired," ava said.
"oh i wasn't going in there. mom wanted me to tell you and jake that she made food, but jake's asleep, so that's more food for us," rosie mischievously exclaimed.
"oh my," ava chuckled, "let's go eat the food and get away from jake's door. we don't want to wake him up."
"how often does jake sleep?" ava asked as she followed rosie to the kitchen.
"oh not often at all," rosie confirmed, "jake always comes home late when i'm asleep and he leaves early in the morning."
ava stared wide eyed at rosie and received a nod from her.
"that's right," rosie sighed, "he's so occupied with training that i don't even think he gets sleep when he comes home. i've walked into jake's room a few times to see him up, practicing."
"brooklyn and i barely get to see him and it's sad, but i know that he's going to become a big star one day," rosie smiled and ran off to get her food.
ava paused her walking and thought about how exhausted jake must be each day, yet he still manages to be such a calm, friendly person.
talk about hardworking and determined.
