On October 1st 1989, 43 women gave birth to 43 children at the exact same time. The peculiar thing about the births was that none of the women were pregnant when the day began. This supernatural event attracted the attention of the affluent and idiosyncratic man that is Sir Reginald Hargreeves. He was determined to collect as many of these miraculous children that he could get his covetous hands on. Of the 43, he acquired only 7.

There were two he narrowly missed. One, a girl with enhanced brainwave activity, was whisked away by the Handler. The other, well he never really knew about her. No-one did. Even though she ended up living not too far from the infamous Umbrella Academy.

In New York, while the unknown was just a few blocks away, Hargreeves was letting his 'children' settle in to their new home. He never came to regard them as if they were his own children, he treated them as students. He wasn't the kind of person to empathise with anyone, let alone seven young children. So, he hired nannies to care for them until they became useful.

They began their training at a young age, and each child grew into their abilities, slowly but surely learning how to hone their own unique skills. Yet one child, Number 7, her power was unfathomable. It was immense and she couldn't control it. So, Hargreeves decided that her power was too dangerous and that she should be raised believing she was powerless. She grew up alone, watching her 6 siblings grow up together, having fun, while she was left alone with her violin.

If only she'd known that a few blocks away there was someone who wanted to be as 'ordinary' as number 7, who needed someone to play their accompaniment.

*16 years, 4 months and 14 days later*

Sir Reginald Hargreeves had kicked the bucket. He was dead. Dead as a doornail as Dickens would say. The 5 of his children that were still on this earth (technically 4 but I digress), had all made their way to their childhood house to be their for his funeral. He may have been a horrendous father, but he was still their father.

Number One, better known as Luther, he had lived on the moon for four years, living in solitude, but as soon as he heard of his father's death, he rushed home. He was the first to arrive back at the academy.

Number Two, better known as Diego, he was 'working' when he heard the news. When he'd left the academy, he was still fixated on helping people so he decided to join the police academy. However, he got kicked out. He was too focused on taking down the bad guys and less worried about the paperwork that came with the job. So, after getting kicked out of the police academy, he became a vigilante. It was during one of his jobs, protecting a family within their own home from criminals. Once the family was safe, he saw the news on their TV. He was never called, but he still returned to the academy. He may have hated his father but it was still his father.

Number Three, better known as Allison, she became a famous actress. After leaving the academy she became ridiculously famous and was exceptionally successful. She was on the red carpet when a member of the paparazzi asked her when she had seen her father last. It was after that that a woman came up to her and whispered to her the news of her father's death. She rushed off of the carpet, not wanting the media to see her in a vulnerable state. She headed back to the academy.

Number Four, better known as Klaus, he was just out of rehab. Leaving the academy gave him more of a reason to fund his drug addiction and he'd been in and out of rehab and hospitals for years. Just after getting out of rehab, he went straight back onto the street and got insanely high, resulting in him being in an ambulance. It was in this ambulance that he notices the 'breaking news' on the little TV in the ambulance. So, he made his way to the academy.

Number Six, better known as Ben, his lifespan had expired. He was now nothing more than a phantom, haunting his brother Klaus. He suffered greatly watching his brother essentially destroy himself and could only try to tell him to stop. He had no say in whether he returned or not, he simply went wherever Klaus went.

Number Seven, better known as Vanya, she was an exceptional musician. She played violin and was the third chair violinist in a local orchestra. She had always been distanced from the other because she was ordinary. She even wrote a book about her experience. It was after practicing her violin to an empty auditorium that, as she walked home in the rain that she came across a TV in a shop window that was reporting the news. Like the others, she made her way back.

When she arrived, the first of her siblings that she encountered was Allison who greeted her merrily. The warm atmosphere of the two sisters meeting instantly disappeared due to Diego's entrance and comments towards his sibling.

"What is she doing here? You don't belong here. Not after what you did."
"You're seriously gonna do this today?" Allison bit back.

To say that there was tension between the siblings would be an understatement. Luther was investigating his own siblings as suspects in the death of his father. Diego was being his usual standoff self and didn't hesitate to reveal Luther's investigation to the rest of his siblings. This, of course, infuriated everyone and they all stormed out of the room, all making their way to separate rooms in the house.

Luther decided to play a song to make himself feel better about what had just happened. He placed the vinyl onto the record player and turned up the volume. It was heard all throughout the house, and each of the siblings let the music move them however it wished. Luther moved like a crab, Diego was enthusiastically attempting to do the shuffle, Allison was dancing with her feather boa, Klaus was waltzing with his father's ashes and Vanya just let her body move in random movements.

All of a sudden, the bright sunny day darkened, thunder roared and lightning flickered as a blue hue engulfed the streets. The siblings all rushed outside to stare blankly at the temporal anomaly before them. Klaus recklessly hurled a fire extinguisher into the glowing 'portal' that was in the sky above, it went straight through. It did nothing.

After Klaus' futile attempt to stop the glowing hole in the sky above them, the siblings noticed an old man on the other side, he looked as though he was falling into or pushing himself through the portal. His face slowly twisted and morphed into that of a young boy and he fell straight down to the ground. The temporal anomaly disappeared and now the boy was lying face down on the ground.

"Does anyone else see little Number Five, or is that just me?" Klaus asks questioning his intoxicated state.

The siblings just stared idly at the boy as he stood up and dusted himself off. He looked at the Hargreeves and then looked down at himself taking in his juvenile frame.

"Shit..."
