"Go on, then! Light the candle!" my father shouted. I was trying as hard as I could to set the wick aflame. I stared at the candle as if my life depended on it. I didn't know then, but in a way, my life did depend on it. But I couldn't do it.

"Argh!" I whacked the candle with the back of my hand, sending it flying across the room. The gold candelabra clattered against the floor.

"Get out of my sight, Zuko." My father waved me away, and a spurt of fire followed. I backed away and scrambled to return to my bedroom.

The next day, I was called to appear before Father again. I walked to the throne room, preparing myself for the worst, though never in my worst nightmares could I imagine what was to come.

"Due to your... lack of skill... you cannot be associated with the royal family."

"Wh-what?"

"You will not go outside. You will no longer have the privilege of being called a 'Prince.'"

"I don't understand..."

"As for the people, they don't know about your inability to bend, and I intend to keep it that way. I will be announcing later today that you have passed away due to illness. You will go along with this plan and follow all guidelines I have outlined for you. I will not have you disgracing the royal family. Understood?"

"Yes... Yes Father-"

"Firelord! I am no longer 'Father' to you."

"Understood, Firelord."

My life was reduced to wandering the castle, though I'd already been in every room, memorized every hallway, and could tell you how many steps were in each stairwell. I was a prisoner in my own home.
