love happens and it happens fast when it's real. mike and will fell for each other the moment their eyes met, that split second dark eyes met chestnut was a glimpse of forever. but when you're young, love doesn't last too long.

they knew they loved each other but it was so early. they knew the fruit of their love was mature, but that didn't change the fact that they were high school freshmen.

it was early for their lovebird friends as well. lucas and max, the coal-haired boy and fire-haired girl, yes the love they had was too pure and innocent and beautiful for this world. there was no way it could last throughout high school.

high school is where love thrives and lives for the very first time, but dies a slow and painful death. it's the strain of youth that prevents high school love from lasting.

yes, mike and will fell apart.

it was noon on a saturday in 1988, junior year, when it happened.

yes, mike and will made it two years. they made it through skeptical parents, supportive friends, and homophobic stares, yes, mike and will made it two years.

when you make it that long without any disruptions, especially for a first relationship, mike liked to believe it meant that they were solid.

but that afternoon, will had gone over to mike's house. he was still short, but he grew around two inches in those two years. mike's height and lankiness skyrocketed upward. they were on his front yard. eleven was in the basement and nancy was with jonathan, likely. mike greeted little will on the lawn, bending down to kiss him. their lips locked in the most passionate and loving way possible.

will's eyes widened at the emotions conveyed in that kiss, yes, even after two years of dating and being in love, will had never received a kiss of this sort before. it was like it was the last time mike would ever see will. the chestnut-haired boy had kissed back. with that kiss came realization for both parties.

it was almost senior year. could they make it? could they last? no, impossible. they'd been through highs and lows, to the moon and back, but could they make it?

for the first time, will and mike were both unsure.

it was a matter of convincing, a matter of persuasion. though every touch and every kiss would leave both their cheeks flushed and heads spinning, was it enough?
