Dinner was considerably less awkward than Hermione had expected. Ginny and Mrs. Weasley kept the conversation going, as did Emmett and Alice. She actually enjoyed making light conversation with Alice; she was knowledgable in many subjects and she even spoke multiple languages. Everyone marveled at how tasty the food was.
"You could be a cook," Draco said to Esme.
"Oh, this is nothing," she replied modestly, "and I had plenty of help from Molly here."
As the two mothers insisted that the other was the better cook, Hermione glanced over at the rest of the table.
It was pretty obvious that Rosalie was openly fasting, and Alice and Jasper picking at their food, but Carlisle and Esme were only taking small bites. Emmett was wolfing down his plate.
Harry seemed to notice this fact, too.
"Why aren't you eating?" he asked Rosalie, point-blank.
"I'm on a special diet," she replied smoothly.
"And you two?" Harry nodded at Alice and Jasper.
The tension grew thick.
"Jasper's also on a diet — medical. I'm just being a supportive girlfriend. He sometimes gets sad when he can't eat the food he wants." To accentuate this fact, Jasper put on a small frown.
"Well you should eat," Harry said. "Surely it's not healthy?"
"Excuse him," Draco butted in. "He's the mom of the group, and gets worried easily. Harry, stop being rude."
"It's okay," Alice chirped. "I'll snack on something later, don't worry, Harry."
Shooting Harry a stern look, Hermione resumed her conversation with Carlisle, allowing the rest of the table ease up a little.
"So you're a doctor, Carlisle? What an admirable job. I've always wanted to be one when I was younger."
"And you're a civil rights activist," Carlisle responded. "That's just as admirable. What are you currently working on?"
"I'm hoping to increase the poorer citizens' wages by the end of this year..."
The rest of the dinner went by with no hiccups. After they had cleared the table, Hermione told the Cullens that she and Ron would be out exploring the small town.
Harry, Draco, and Ginny joined them. Once at a far enough distance, they apparated to the busier part of town. They found a local café and stepped inside.
The café had somewhat of a rustic and vintage interior, and the menu proudly displayed the fact that they had been around since the forties. The café was adorned with old pictures in large, clunky frames, and broken down televisions that seemed to only exist for the aesthetic. Soft, jazzy music played from the jukebox, a contraption in which Ginny was very interested in.
"During dinner, that was real subtle there, Harry," Draco snorted when they had finally sat down.
"Yeah," Ginny said, "what was that about?"
"Harry thinks that the Cullens are vampires," Ron said.
"Not think. They are vampires."
"Hermione?" Ginny asked.
Hermione gestured for a waiter. "Yeah, it's possible," she admitted. "Whatever they are though, one thing's for sure: they're not human."
"I did think there was something was a bit strange about them," Ginny mused as Hermione ordered five teas, "but I just thought they were a wonky, quirky family."
"Remember when I crashed into a vase today?" Harry said. "Jasper, Alice, and Emmett all left the room. Rosalie was incredibly tense, as was Esme."
"What about Carlisle though?"
"He's a doctor," Harry shrugged. "He's probably trained himself to not react to blood."
"Yeah, but he's a doctor," Ron pointed out. "A vampire can't be a doctor, no matter how well-trained."
"Maybe they can," Harry shot back. "And during dinner, no one ate."
"Emmett ate," Ginny said.
"Have you seen that guy though?" Draco raised an eyebrow. "He looks like he would be up for anything if someone dared him to, including eating food."
"So you agree?" Harry asked excitedly.
"Maybe. I don't know. What else do you have?"
"Well, they certainly look like vampires. Pale skin, abnormally beautiful, graceful and fast, ice cold skin..."
The waiter came by to serve them their teas. Hermione took a sip and grimaced a little as the scalding liquid burned her tongue.
"Esme and Carlisle are too nice to kill anyone."
"You never know with vamps," Harry replied darkly.
"But Bella... You don't think she's one of them, too? Or Charlie?"
"Bella certainly is, but I'm not sure about Charlie. I'm pretty sure he's human. Was she always like this when you were younger?"
"Well, she was always pale," Hermione frowned. "But not as pale as she is now. And her features have definitely become more defined; beautiful. Do you really think she's a vampire?"
"I'm sure of it," Harry said decisively. "There's no other explanation; the Cullens are vampires."
Hermione let that sink in. The Cullens, vampires. Her own cousin was one, too. When the hell did that happen?
Sucking in a deep breath, Ginny set down her tea cup. "Should we really stay in the same house as them? And shouldn't we tell Mum and Dad about them?"
"They don't seem dangerous, though."
"They're vampires, Ron. How are they not dangerous?"
"Then what do we do?"
"We don't have much of a choice," Hermione said. "We can't just up and leave. I say we stay, but keep a close eye on them. Don't get to close, and always keep your wand in your pocket."
"We'll have to be incredibly careful, but I think we'll be fine. More of them than there are us. It's not a fight we can easily win, if it even comes to that. We didn't get much of an education on them in our first and second years, but what Lupin taught us should be enough if you were paying attention."
Ron coughed a bit at this.
"Don't forget to tell Mr. and Mrs. Weasley about this," Harry added, looking between Ginny and Ron.
The group nodded, and clenched their wand tightly.
"Let's go," Ginny said.
"Be careful," Harry emphasized. "And don't talk about them in or near the house, they have perfect hearing."
Placing a few bills on the table, the group left and headed to a back alley to evaporate. Giving each other stern looks, they turned once and disappeared.
