Ryan

Ryan was petrified . He couldn't speak. Shane, his foolish , foolish friend, had let his arrogance get the better of him. Ryan had watched helplessly as the body of Shane collapsed into his arms. He couldn't save his friend's spirit as it vanished, calling his name. Tears ran down Ryan's cheeks as he clutched Shane's sagging shoulders. This wouldn't of happened, Ryan scolded, if you were just strong enough to resist the shaman's offer. But he didn't resist, which scared him tremendously. The shaman showed Ryan a future  without anyone questioning him or his theories, a future where he never lost his dominance. In a twisted way, the shaman full filled his promises, but a terrible price. Ryan would never see Shane again. A dark laugh echoed through the almost pitch black room, tearing Ryan from his trance of agony. "You wanted this, mr Bergara," rumbled the magician, Ghede, as he slinked from the shadows. Ryan noticed that he was wearing the same terrible smirk as when he offered Ryan and Shane their 'dreams' and for that, Ryan wanted to rip the smile of that wretched shaman's face- no matter how much pain he got in return. "And now.... you should be satisfied. This was your doing, after all,"Ghede continued. Ryan couldn't take it anymore. He carefully lifted Shane over his shoulders, and bolted from the parlour. He didn't look back.

Ryan had no idea where to go. Here he was, with the body of his friend in his arms, in the middle of nowhere. He didn't know whether to leave and face the endless string of questions about the death of Shane, or just.... he didn't know what else. Ryan was lost for words, lost for thoughts. He lost his closest friend to the thing he vowed to prove was real. Just as Ryan was about to let out a cry of despair, a raspy familiar old female voice called: "Excuse me, boy. You think you can take this inside?" Ryan was still too shocked to reply, so the wizened woman shook her head and tutted. "Well, I suppose I could lift him." She grabbed hold of Shane's still body, not breaking a sweat, and then raised an eyebrow at the sobbing mess on her patio. He peered back at her, with tears in his eyes, and stood up slowly, as if he had just fainted. "I-I'll help, ma'am" Ryan said, finding his voice. The old lady simply shook her head and hoisted the limp body over her shoulders.

"Now, boy, tell me everything." Now in the safety of the old lady's bungalow, Ms Babbitt peered at Ryan curiously as she placed herself on a seemingly hand carved wooden rocking chair by a roaring fireplace. Ryan took a deep breath. He felt truly terrible, but he had to tell someone his sorry tale. His voice softened as he recounted the events of the week, since the strange meeting with the odd girl, Dahlia. As the story came to a close, he couldn't keep it in any longer. Waves of tears streamed down his cheeks and his sobs seemed like that of a child. Shane ... His face as he dissolved into shadows was seared into Ryan's memory, his closest friend's last words echoed through his mind. The pain was unbearable, unstoppable. The truth was settling in-Shane was gone. "You miss him?" The question brought Ryan back to the present. Ms. Babbitt was sitting in the corner of the fire lit living room, her eyes clouded with almost maternal concern. Ryan could only nod weakly. "Hmm" Babbitt mused "When you say that he disappeared-" "Yeah. Uh.... he kind of... I don't know. He split." "Split?" "Y-yeah." And with that, the elderly woman rose from her seat at an alarming speed, her eyes alight with urgency. "Did you see his soul?"she implored, her voice wavering. Ryan lifted his head, his eyes still reddened with tears. "No." Ryan responded with a pause. "No? Ms Babbitt repeated "You said he split." Wait a second, Ryan thought, the ghost. "He collapsed..... and he was dragged somewhere I couldn't see." Babbitt raised a brow. "So. He did split. Follow me." She cried, speed walking out of the darkened room. Ryan bolted upwards and yelled hoarsely: "Where are you going? What about Shane?" Babbitt just turned to him and whispered:

"Boy, come with me. I know a way we can return your friend."
