----------------------------------
I sighed in relief. Meg was pretty awesome. I'm so glad to have met her.
We turned to the hallway that lead to French class. Meg stopped me just short of the door.
"Wait here, kay," she said, motioning her hands for me to stay still as she walked in the classroom.
I was confused, but, okay. I just nodded and did as she asked. Shortly after she went in, she came out with M. Mercer. He looked at me sympathetically.
"Meg told me what happened," he said softly and I gave her a quick glare. "Don't worry. She didn't tell me what it was you talked about- just about what happened in the cafeteria and then that you and her talked about something private from your past."
Now I felt guilty for glaring at Meg and not trusting her. I gave her an apologetic look and she smiled back at me.
"If you need anything, please let me know," he said looking me in the eye before turning to Meg. "You must need a note for class, I'll get you one."
"Be careful. He might write something totally untrue on that note," I whispered to Meg as he walked into the classroom.
Somehow I got the feeling that he heard me and was smirking. He came back out with the note and handed it to Meg.
"You'd best be getting to class now," he said to her as he gently ushered me into class.
"Bye Arie," she said waving to me as she walked away.
M. Mercer had a crooked grin.
"Arie," he whispered. "That's a cute nickname."
I took a seat and M. Mercer got on with class.
The bell rang and everyone left the room, except for me. M. Mercer looked at me still sitting at my desk.
"Class is over Arie,-" he said.
"Arielle," I quickly corrected him. "Meg is the only one who can call me by that."
"Ok- Arielle- why are you still here," he asked walking towards me.
I put my head down on my arms on the desk.
"I don't wanna go anywhere," I muttered, almost inaudible.
He sat at the desk beside me.
"You have to go to class, Arielle," he said as he placed his hand gently on my back.
It was exactly where my mom had first stabbed me. I screamed in pain. His touch hadn't hurt me at all, but the memory was still there. It was the memory of the pain and the fear that had caused me to involuntarily scream.
M. Mercer looked at me, in shock, "Arielle, what's wrong!"
I pulled away from him and wrapped my arms around myself.
"It's nothing," I lied.
He looked at me concerned.
"I know that's not true," he said. "Talk to me, please. You can trust m-"
"No I can't!" I practically yelled to his face. "I've made the mistake of trusting someone before and it nearly cost me my life."
I could tell by the look on his face that my words just now had really hurt him. He looked sad and confused.
