"What?"
Stephan growled he was sure the whole building heard it. He slammed the receiver and stormed out of his office. His legs took him to the hospital building, it was almost at the centre of his territory and near to the building that housed his office. Everyone bowed as he stomped his way to his destination. His anger rolled off him in waves making his pack cower to his beast. Everyone knew better than cross paths with an angry Alpha.
"Alpha." His beta, Eddie, stood at the entrance, his head slightly bowed as a sign of submissions. His beast calmed a little at the sight. Without much words, his beta turned towards the corridor, after a series of flight and doors, he stopped in front of the slightly ajar hospital room. Two guards were stationed beside the door and there were few other scattered at each entrance point. Stephan felt proud that his beta took the initiative in at least securing the rogue he brought to the territory.
When Eddie saw his Alpha was calmer than before he spoke.
"Stephan..." He was not only his beta but his best friend too. And he was the few who were honoured to call him by his name.
Stephan eyed his beta struggling to find the right words that, he would have laughed it weren't for the situation. Everyone knew Stephan hated rogues with a passion, ever since he lost his parents in the rogue attack. This forced him to take the Alpha position at a young age. Stephan wasn't the only one, Eddie lost his mother too in the attack, and they had to watch his father slowly deteriorating away. But the former beta was stronger, he took Stephan under his wing, showed him the ropes of being the Alpha he is today. In a way, he became his second father.
"Stephan, try to be open-minded." Eddie continued.
Stephan raised his eyebrow as to what the hell was his beta trying to say. He was seconds away from grabbing his neck and throttling for being reckless. But he knows his friend and his beta, it wasn't quite like him to act recklessly. It was more his style, slam first then ask the questions. Maybe that's why their duo worked out perfectly, they balance out each well.
He was in his office earlier when he heard the howl, just like the whole pack. Everyone went on alert, then he heard from others that his beta and some trackers took off without informing him, out of the territory for unexplained reasons. His beast stirred within himself, even though his human side tried to find the reasoning, his beast saw it as disrespect. He tried to calm himself down before he would do something they both would regret later.
Stephan gave a stiff nod to his friend. Eddie regarded his Alpha a second and turned to open the door.
Stephan stepped inside the room, there wasn't much standing out in the room, except for the girl that lied on the white hospital cot. Her face was pale, and there were some purple bruises and scratches. Her dark hair spread out creating a halo around her face. Her eyes were closed, she otherwise looked peaceful almost sleeping, if not for the tubes attached to her body in different areas.
He felt strange standing there in the room with the girl, like he was calm, content even. But it wasn't him, it was his beast. And for the life of him, he couldn't explain what made his beast calm. Being an alpha, the temper and the need to be in control was almost a given. But this, he shook his head of the thoughts, dealing with unexplainable things wasn't his forte. But Eddie would. Now he understood what his beta was trying to tell him.
Stephan was close enough, that he could just reach out touch the girl just lying there helplessly. But something stopped him, it felt like an invasion of her privacy.
"No. It's not what you think." Eddie told slowly. Stephan almost jumped, he forgot all about him while he was in a debate with himself.
He turned around and gave a stink eye to his beta. Doesn't he know nothing about privacy? Not that it doesn't matter much to them, they grew up together, shared their whole life together, the better and the worst of them. And with the whole thing about being Alpha and Beta. Beta always have his Alphas back, it's something that goes without a saying.
"We all felt it." Eddie continued. Stephan didn't ask much anymore, he can interrogate him later.
"How is she?" Stephan asked, turning back to the girl.
"She should make a full recovery soon. She is dehydrated and starved. There are some bruises and scratch marks but nothing major. There are also marks on her wrist like she was bound, probably by silver. From the look of it, she could probably be kidnapped and held somewhere." Eddie gave a preliminary report.
Stephan nods his head to show he was listening, but his eyes didn't leave her.
"We will probably know more once the doctor has the test results." Eddie continued.
"Stephan." This got his attention, he pried his eyes from the girl and settled them on his beta. "There is more." Eddie held his eyes. When he saw the seriousness. He nods and walked out of the room with Eddie closely behind him.
Both men walked back to the building that housed their office.
Stephan looked around him, his territory was large and over the years they have grown. He was proud of what they have achieved, it wasn't just his effort, it was all of them, the whole pack. The main building like the hospital, school, his and other main members office were all situated at the centre of the territory so that it is accessible to the whole pack.
When they reached his office, Stephan took his chair, Eddie sat opposite to him. And Eddie narrated the whole story of finding the new visitor, who was peacefully sleeping at their pack hospital.
