~ "Fat!", "Ugly!", "Worthless,", "Go kill yourself already!", "All you are is a waste of space."
The insults were spat at me by people from school. The ones who had already said those things at my old school and the ones who were thinking it at my new school here in California.
The many faces disappeared as my family replaced it. My mother spoke in an echoey voice, "We love you sweetie. Don't listen to them,"
Their voices suddenly vanished. Mary and Dylan kissing suddenly faded into the darkness and they pulled away. Mary sneered at me, "Listen to them. Kill yourself already. I don't get why you even bother living. Jake will never like you the way you like him." She went back to kissing Dylan.
They faded away and John's face appeared. He gave a small smile, "Don't give up Talia. To me, you're worth it."
I shook my head, and as I shook my head, John disappeared and my old best friend from Maine suddenly showed up.
She looked at me disgusted, "Look at you. You've become such a whore now. I really hope you choose to die," she spat.
Jakes face flashed in the darkness before everything faded away. There were only faint echoes of the insults that still flooded through the dark nothing. I looked down at my pale, nearly white hands. Blood began to pour out of them uncontrollably. It drained out of me quickly and soon the darkness turned to complete white. The floor stained red and I closed my eyes.
Time to let go... And so I did. ~
***MARY'S POV***
We all sat in the hospital chairs, waiting for the doctors to finish running their tests. They were trying to determine when -- or whether-- she will wake up.
The doctor emerged from the swinging door with a grave expression on his face. Jake sprang up first, and everyone else followed suit.
"She's not doing good. Her symptoms have been getting worse. We're not sure if she'll ever wake up. It's like she's lost all of her will to live," he said sadly, shaking his head. He walked back down the hall and mom began to sob into dad's shoulder. Jake sat back down in shock.
"I'm gonna go visit her," I muttered and walked down to her room. I passed a surprised looking Dylan on the way there.
"Mary? What are you doing here?" He asked, sounding genuinely surprised at the sight of me.
I pushed him off of me when he tried to hug me, "I'm here for my sister. Now get out of my way. You're blocking her door.
At the harsh coldness of my voice, he stepped to the side with his hands up in surrender. I stepped in the room and shut the door behind me. I gasped at the sight of Talia. My always smiling little sister, the girl who always uses sarcasm and never hesitates to give her opinion -- whether it'll hurt them or not.
Talia lay there, eerily motionlessly and quietly. Not even a slight stir or the twitch of a muscle. Nothing. It was like she was actually dead. But that wouldn't be all that different seeing as though she was already a ghostly pale white in color. I looked at her petite body and found bruises and cuts along her arms thanks to those evil bitches back at school.
I shuddered, I didn't even want to think about THEM right now. Not even for a second. I cleared them out of my head and looked back to my sister. My beautiful, loving, popular sister. I didn't have a single doubt that she was more popular than me. Maybe it's because she's always hanging out with Jake or the part where she's just so likable. Either way, she was just more popular.
I guess jealousy was the only thing that caused me to hurt my sister through Dylan. I mean, I didn't even like him and I completely led him on just to get back at my own little sister. Could I get any bitchier? I sighed. Of course, I could've been one of the girls who put her in this state. I stepped up next to Talia and took her hand in my own.
"Find that will again, Talia. Don't you dare die on me, alright? I'll tell you everything. Just don't die. Find the will to live," I whispered to her as tears freely streamed down my makeup-free face.
I walked out of the room and sat back down with the family. God I miss her already.
***TWO WEEKS LATER***
(Still in Mary's POV)
"Go set the table," my mom told me, in her usual sad voice. I just nodded my head numbly and placed plates and silverware around the table. I still set Talia's seat, even though it was likely she would never come back to us.
The doctors had said it was a slim chance she would wake up. 0.5% chance to be exact. Basically it would be 1 out of 1,000. Jake has been an emotional wreck. He gets drunk every night and even punched his dad in the face. Liz was actually able to talk sense into him, but now he's just plain old depressed.
I know Talia would be disappointed if she found out we were all acting like this. But who wouldn't act like this when they found out their little sister was basically going to die in her sleep?
Kathryn walked into the room, hugging her teddy bear close to her side. So innocently and sweetly, she asked, "Mary, when is Talia coming home?"
My heart nearly shattered as the words came out of her mouth. We hadn't told the youngest sister of our family, trying to shield her from the pain we were all already going through. We didn't need a young 8 year old girl getting depressed because her older sister is going to die. It just wouldn't be right to do that to her.
"I'm not sure," I finally replied with a sad smile.
"Okay," she sighed and sat down in her usual chair. The phone rang and mom answered it from in the kitchen.
"Hello?" She answered, an ever so fake enthusiastic tone hanging from her voice.
I heard the sound of a dish fall to the ground and break, then the phone falling. I winced but broke out of my trance when Kathryn tugged on my sleeve.
"Mommy said to get in the car," she said sweetly. I gave her a small, tight lipped smile and climbed into the back seat of the car with her. Liz joined us and mom sat in the passenger's side while dad drove.
When we stopped at the hospital, my chest began to pound and my stomach started to flutter. What was going on with Talia?
It was one of two things: She woke up, or she finally died.
I winced externally as I realized I had said the word finally. It sounded as if I had been anticipating her death or something. Like I was inviting her to it.
Mom sprinted to her room and I followed right behind her. She burst through the door and I gasped at the sight in front of me.
Talia's eyes were wide open...
And she was smiling and waving at us. She finally woke up. An enormous smile broke out on my face and I enveloped her into a tight bear hug.
"I'm so sorry," I mumbled under my breath. She just shook her head and squeezed me back.
"We all do stupid things," she chuckled a little.
Just as we pulled apart, the door burst open and Jake was standing in the doorway. He was shirtless and smiling, "Talia," he breathed.
I didn't fail to notice the way his eyes shone with light when he saw her smile. A light we haven't seen, or even remembered, since Talia began being friends with him.
Does he... Love her?
I smiled at the picture of them hugging as the rest of the Moore family rushed in, huge smiles on their faces. Without a second thought, Marcus rushed towards me and kissed me full on the lips. I guess this was our way if telling our folks we're together now.
They all gasped and looked completely and utterly shocked.
Suddenly, Talia began to start laughing, "I knew you two would end up together!"
We all laugh together and I see the way Jake stares at Talia, the longing and love so obvious in his eyes. Was she really that blind? I rolled my eyes, I would definitely have to get them together.
