chapter four

"i've done a lot of research and tried my best to hack into a few security cameras and i'm postive i've found him this time. i have no doubt in my mind that this is him."

jisung rolled his eyes. "that's the fifth time you've said that and then you suddenly realised that you've made some sort of mistake."

"don't be mean jisung." felix swat his best friend. "jeongin is trying his best. it's hard work."

"yes." jeongin removed his glasses and rubbed his sore eyes. "very hard work. i went to university to be good at this. but then hard work pays of." jeongin smiled at his freckled friend. "now i'm working for cyber security. you shouldn't worry about whether i'm reliable or not."

"no need to boast," jisung murmured.

chan thought for a moment. "so isn't what you're doing right now breaking the rules of your job?"

jeongin's cheeks reddened. "um...maybe. anyways, have a look at this." jeongin passed his laptop to chan.

everybody knew that jeongin would never travel anywhere without his sacred laptop. he was often called a tech junkie because of his love for technology and hacking.

if you ever ended up on the wrong side of jeongin he would most likely hack your phone.

"that looks like him alright." chan said as he watched the cctv footage.

chan could clearly see a curly haired blond boy being carried towards a black van by one guy followed by another one behind them.

"my baby," felix (who was also watching) breathed out.

"does any recognise any of these two boys?" jeongin paused the footage and zoomed in on the two boys who were staring directly at the camera.

minho leaned over. "they look pretty young if i'm being honest. maybe a year or two older than jeongin?"

jeongin was doubtful but he didn't comment.

chan sighed. "i don't know them. i've never seen them before and i know nearly all the people who work alongside changbin."

"they all died remember?" jeongin said.

"no," jisung stood up. "not all of them. hyunjin and seungmin are very much alive living together back in seoul."

chan clicked his fingers. "jisung, you're a genius!"

jisung smirked at jeongin who simply rolled his eyes.

chan grabbed his phone and left the living room. he went up to the room he shared with felix and shut the door behind him.

he didn't want to be able to hear jisung and jeongin bicker when he had a call to make.

"hyunjin?"

"oh wow," hyunjin said. "it's been a hot minute christopher bang! how's it going in england? i heard it's pretty cold over there."

chan would have loved to talk to hyunjin for hours about how his new life was in england but there was no time and there was far more important things to discuss.

"i can't really explain that right now..."

"is something wrong? i can tell with the tone of your voice."

"hyunjin." chan took a deep breath. "what i'm about to say might sound crazy but...changbin is alive."

hyunjin didn't say anything for a while which made chan believe that he was no longer there.

"hyunjin...?"

hyunjin startled chan by bursting into laughter. it didn't sound like joyful laughter...it sounded rather nervous and forced.

"don't be silly chan," hyunjin said gently. "he's dead. jeongin killed him. have you forgotten?"

chan grit his teeth. "well he somehow survived the shot. how could i possibly forget that day? it was the worst day of my life." chan hated how it sounded as if hyunjin was mocking him.

"well..." hyunjin trailed of. "are you and your family safe?"

"no," chan wailed. "he took jasper! i don't know how but he did! he took jasper because he wants me to give myself up but i have no idea where to find him. jeongin found some cctv footage--"

"what was on the footage?"

"two guys who none of us know walking with him to a van. i called because i know you've worked with changbin for years so i wanted you to see the footage for yourself."

"okay, send it to me and i'll see."

jeno put a bowl of porridge in front of jasper who stared at the bowl skeptically.

"it's safe, don't worry," jeno reassured the four year old. "my boss wants you to eat so you look good."

jasper pushed the bowl away from him and folded his arms. "felix said i should never accept food from strangers. why should i need to look good anyway?"

jeno couldn't tell jasper the truth.

he could tell him he was being shipped of. he'd panic.

"so that...when your parents come and get you they won't be worried."

jasper thought for a moment.

"okay." jasper timidly reached for the bowl.

he picked the spoon up and scooped a bit of the porridge and licked a bit of the porridge.

"it tastes nice," jasper mumured as he eagerly ate the porridge. he hasn't had much to eat in a few days now.

jeno smiled. "that's good. i made it myself."

jasper stooped eating and looked up at jeno. "why are you being nice to me?"

jeno stopped smiling and pretended to be serious. "you want me to be mean to you then?"

"no no!" jasper said quickly. "please don't be mean to me."

jeno's smile returned. "i was only messing with you. i won't be mean to you."

jeno ruffled jasper's curls. "you're a cute kid. i just wished we didn't have to bring you here."

jasper offered jeno some porridge who happily accepted it, oblivious to the angered eyes watching him in the shadows.

"he's getting too close to that kid," renjun murmured as he stood up and turned to the boy beside him. "too close for comfort. right jaemin?"

the said boy shrugged. "not my problem. jeno dug his own grave as soon as that kid arrived. he can lay in it for all i care."
