Dear Diary,
Shalom. I am all packed now. Mrs. Simon gave me farewell gifts, though that was unnecessary. She has given us so much already. Because of her we remained safe with a roof over out heads and food in our bellies. She didn't need to get me these gifts, but oh, how I do adore them. This morning, she gave me a cloak to keep me warm during the journey and a fancy leather suitcase. Mama says to hide the Shabbat candles between my clothes in the suitcase, so nobody sees them if they open the suitcase. Even with the danger, we can't leave our tradition behind. Mama's bringing her belongings in an old pillowcase, though whatever could fit in my suitcase went in there. We must also bring along food, just in case. Mama says we can bring maccaroons! I'll be bringing Papa's watch, Granny's bonnet, and Cassy's necklace, as a reminder of those who are no more. I'll pack those in my suitcase, too. I love my suitcase. It is brown leather with a little black handle, and it has wheels! Can you believe it has wheels? I've never owned a suitcase with wheels before! Mrs. Simon embroidered my name along the side with fancy purple string. I'll miss Mrs. Simon when I'm gone. She's like a second mother to me...
