"Jeff Count was a man in his mid-thirties. He was quiet and timid. He always avoided eye contact with anyone. He was raised in an orphanage. They found him one day wondering the streets alone when he was only four years old. They asked him what was he doing wondering the streets and where was his mom. His answer was the most shocking thing a child his age back then would say.'
Both me and Alec looked at Dr.Fakher waiting for her to continue.
'He said,' Mother was dead. A knife in her tummy. A lot of red thing. She was not talking.' The police was able to obtain the address of their residence and indeed they found the body of the woman the same as the child had described.'
''Jeff has been with his mother's corpse for three days. After these days, he decided to go and find help for his mother.''
I gasped. How can a child survive after this?
''The orphanage where Jeff was sent to wasn't the best around. The owner was known to be cruel and all the nannies were too. They were very harsh with the kids. For some sick reason they decided to increase the dose with Jeff. They would beat them till he wouldn't be able to move, insult him every time he do the slightest thing. He stayed in the orphanage until he was 18. He wasn't adopted.'' Dr.Fakher looked deeply disturbed reminiscing these facts about Count's early life.
''After leaving the orphanage, he had nowhere to go. He started to live on the streets. One day a man approached him and told him that he had a job for him. Jeff followed him believing that the man can snatch him from the hell he was living in. The man however had another thing in mind.'' The doctor took a deep breath before delivering the next bomb.
''Jeff was assaulted that night. The man when finished left him on the dark alley passed out. The next morning another man was passing by and found him. He carried him to a hospital. After Jeff woke up the man told him that he would be living with his family. Naturally, Jeff didn't believe the man. However, the man was very kind and promised Jeff that he was nothing like the monster that he met before. And so Jeff did follow the man and lived with him and his family.''
''What was the name of that man?'' Alec interrupted her.
''John Count. That's where Jeff got his last name.'' the doctor answered before going back to the story.
''When Jeff was twenty-six, old man Count passed away. Back then Jeff was a well known blacksmith. He stayed with the family and was the one responsible for the money income. Emily, his stepsister, was married some years later. Mrs. Count passed away when Jeff was thirty-one. He stayed in the family household. He never married. Three years later the serial killing started with the first victim being Emily Count.''
I felt faint. ''His adoptive sister!'' I breathed.
''One after the other, the killing kept happening. It was getting more and more gruesome. Until one day one of Jeff's neighbour called the police. He said that he heard a woman's screams from Jeff's house. He reported that the man living in that house was living alone.''
''At that time, police was looking for any thread that they can follow to solve these killings once and for all. When the police reached Jeff's house they turned everything upside down. Digging in his backyard, they found the remains of human corpses. He was arrested at once. Everyone was relieved. They solved the big mystery.''
''But it wasn't Jeff, was it?'' I mumbled. Hearing the upbringing and the life of Jeff Count was making me sick. How can someone live through all that suffering?
