WHEN ADRIA GRANT WOKE UP THE NEXT DAY, SHE TRIED HER BEST TO PUSH THE PREVIOUS NIGHT OUT OF HER MIND. Seeing JJ shoot the gun at the sky and watching the people run off is exactly why she didn't like the idea of JJ having the gun in the first place. Someone could have easily gone to the police and told them about what happened, which mean most likely jail time or at least getting arrested for JJ.

She was still angry at JJ for what happened, but she still couldn't help but forgive him after what Pope had told her. Was she so focused on her own feelings about JJ all these years that she didn't notice that he felt the same way? In her mind, there was no possibility that JJ reciprocated her feelings, so was she really that oblivious to the fact that JJ felt the same way about her?

After throwing on a bathing suit, a tank top, and shorts, which was normal for her summer wardrobe, she walked out to the kitchen to see her mother sitting at the kitchen table. She had a confused look on her face, her brown glasses sitting on the tip of her nose as she scrolled through her phone. Once her daughter entered the room, Annisa immediately started questioning her.

"Hey, there was an article in the paper this morning that there was a fight at a party last night and a gun was involved. Adria, please tell me no one had a gun last night at the party you were at." She pleaded. Adria froze at the mention of the gun. While she stared into the open fridge, she took a breath to prepare herself to lie to her mother. Her mom was pretty tolerant of what she and her friends did, but she knew she wouldn't be tolerant of JJ having a gun around her.

"A gun? Ha, that's funny." Adria laughed, a hint of nerves in her voice. She grabbed a plastic water bottle and turned to her mother, a surprised look on her face.

"What idiot would bring a gun to a party full of teenagers?" Adria asked her mom, rolling her eyes internally because if her mother knew who the idiot was, she would never let Adria see him again.

"And why is the paper writing about a bunch of teenagers that had a party? Don't they have more important things to write about?" Adria continued, and her mother raised her eyebrows, agreeing with her.

"That's island life, baby. Your business is everyone's business." Annisa reminded her daughter, watching her pack her bag.

"Out with your friends again? I swear you like them more than you like me." Annisa joked, and Adria shook her head.

"I have work, Mom. Remember work?" She asked, and her mother shook her head.

"Nope, that word is not in my vocabulary." Annisa scrunched up her nose in annoyance. Since she worked so hard during the school year, Annisa really valued her time off in the Outer Banks. It gave her time to unwind and relax, to forget about her responsibilities on the mainland and just live life the way it was intended, slowly and peacefully.

Walking over to her mom at the table, she pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Goodbye, drama queen. You should go to the beach today, get some fresh air." Adria encouraged her mother, because as far as she knew, she hadn't left the house since before the hurricane.
