ADRIA GRANT WAS AWOKEN SUDDENLY BY LOUD POUNDING ON HER FRONT DOOR. She was known for not being a morning person, so whoever was knocking on her door at this ungodly hour of the day was about to feel her wrath. Groaning, she threw herself out of bed and swung open her bedroom door. While walking down the small hallway, she was met with her mother sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper, completely ignoring whoever was at the door.
"Couldn't you have gotten that?" Adria asked her mom, who looked up from the paper to see her daughter running a hand through her hair.
"Whoever's here is not here for me." Annisa told her, and she only rolled her eyes before unlocking the door and swinging it open.
JJ Maybank stood behind the door, smiling when he saw the girl. She was still half asleep, her eyes barely opened and squinting due to the bright morning sun. He thought she looked adorable.
"About time, Adri. My arms were starting to get tired." He told her, to which she rolled her eyes.
"Do you know what time it is?" She asked him, widening the door for him to walk in. He shoved the lighter he was holding into his pocket and strode into her entryway.
"Of course I do." He said, looking around her house as if it had changed since he had been in there last summer. "We have big plans, gonna go fish for some crab."
"Can't that wait until after 8 am?" Adria asked, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes and crossing her arms over her chest. He sucked in a breath, leaning against the wall and shaking his head.
"No can do, gorgeous. Gotta get out there before everyone else does. Now, go and change, we'll meet you at the dock." He ordered her. She was about to respond back when Annisa got up from the table and walked over to the two teens.
"JJ, good to see you." Annisa said sweetly, resting her hand on her daughter's back. "Now, why the hell were you banging on my door at seven thirty in the morning?" She asked the boy, who smiled and shook his head.
"Sorry, Ms. Grant. I was just here to pick up Adria so we could go fishing." He said, a nervous tone in his voice. He had met Adria's mother before, but she always intimidated him every time he saw her.
"Ah, I see." She nodded. "And please, JJ, it's Annisa." She reassured him. Annisa could tell that Adria had feelings for the boy. Sure, he came from a bad home and had a troubled past, but from what she could see, he really seemed to care for her daughter, which is all she asked for.
Adria watched JJ nod awkwardly, a slight smile forming on her face. "I'll be out in a sec, J." He nodded and stepped back out the door. Annisa turned to Adria, her eyebrows raised.
"Do you even know how to fish?" She asked, and Adria laughed.
"No, of course not. Do I look like the type to sit on a boat all day with a stick and wait for innocent fish to swim their way onto my hook?" She asked, walking back to her bedroom. Annisa followed her, picking up her cup of coffee on the way.
