It was a dark and stormy day in Oceanus, most people would be inside, out of the oncoming rain.
But not Nimue. She loved to swim, even when it was cloudy and stormy out. Most people would call her crazy, but she didn't care.
She was only six years old, and she was always swimming, like she was made for the water.
Nimue was just swimming on her own, minding her own business when she saw a dark fin break the surface of the water. She stopped immediately, and looked around for the fin of the shark.
Nimue had seen sharks before while out swimming. But she always avoided them by climbing on top of something, like a floating whale carcass, a small stretch of sand, or a large rock or reef. But not this time, there was nothing to get on.
That's when she felt something brush her foot, she didn't panic like most people would. She looked down and saw a dolphin, she then realized that she was safe. Because where there was one dolphin, it's pod was around.
The dolphin surfaced, and started making clicks and whistles at her.
The dolphin then saw the fin of the shark, and made a high pitched noise that she guessed was a distress signal.
The shark just swam closer and closer.
The dolphin then turned around, and allowed her to get on its back. When she was on, the dolphin started swimming.
Nimue looked behind her, and saw that the shark was giving chase, slowly gaining on them.
Then the shark stopped, and started thrashing. Nimue looked closer and saw at least five dolphins swimming around the shark attacking it.
That's when she heard a thunderous boom sound. Nimue looked up, and there flying above her was the biggest thing she had ever seen in her life. A dragon bigger than a blue whale.
The dragon was brown with amber scales and a lighter shade of amber under scales and orange-amber wing membranes. The dragon was heavily built, and was flying about five hundred feet above my head, towards her island.
Nimue suddenly remembered the Dragon Rider coming to see if any children in her village were riders. Dread seeped into her. Her parents were going to be so mad at her for being late.
She was already a nuisance to her parents and everyone in her village. She had already set two houses on fire trying to start a fire in the fireplace(their first one and their neighbors).
That was the main reason she was always swimming, you can't set anything thing on fire in the water. Her father was so going to kill her for being late, embarrassing him in front of the whole village again, especially in front of a Dragon Rider. And not telling him and her mother where she had gone. Her mother probably had a heart attack by now. She was so dead.
Her friend Alana would probably tell them were she was at.
It had just started pouring after the dragon landed on the island. The shark and other dolphins had disappeared after the dragon flew over them.
"Hey girl, can you go a little bit faster? I really need to get home," Nimue said to the dolphin.
The dolphin replied by going faster, soon they were nearly there.
By the time she had stepped foot on the island it had just started lightning and thundering.
She saw her friend Alana waiting for her under the trees.
Nimue ran over to her, and asked her, "Is it already over? Did anyone get a dragon?"
"No one got a dragon, and it's over." She replied. "Your dad is also in a raging fit looking for, and your mother went inside with Tatiana after it started thundering and lightning."
"Oh Mulop I am so dead. Is the rider still here?"
Alana pointed to an area with people standing around a red headed woman about twenty some years old. She was standing by a man she soon recognized as her father, who looked absolutely furious.
"Whose the red head?" She asked Alana. "That's Kala, she's the Dragon Rider," Alana answered.
"Well wish me luck. Oh and if you don't see me I'll probably be dead or grounded for life," she told Alana, making her give her a shy smile.
Nimue ran over to Kala and her dragon she saw earlier.
She ignored the various glares and rude whispers from her fellow villagers.
"It's Akamu and Mimi's daughter, such a disappointment."
"For the sake of Mulop she's all wet! Absolutely disgraceful during an event like this."
"She looks like she's been spit up by the ocean."
"Oh, it's her. Poor Mimi and Akamu having to deal with such a disappointment."
"They should just exile her, she'll probably burn down the entire island."
"She's never been normal, she's always been strange ever since she was born.
She heard all of these rude words, but she kept running towards Kala. She ran up to her, with her father glaring down on her.
"Excuse me, but I haven't got to touch the egg," she said to Kala.
The Rider only nodded, and went over to her dragon.
That's when her father exploded on her.
"Where have you been! Your mother almost had a heart attack when it started storming! She's been worried sick about you! When Alana told us you were out swimming, your mother almost fainted at the thought of you out there swimming when it was about to storm!"
"I am sorry, I really am," she said to his red and furious face.
"Sorry won't fix what me and your mother went through trying to figure out what happened to you!" He yelled at her.
Nimue was swallowed up by sadness and disappointment in herself. Her parents didn't know where she was, they thought she was gone for good. What would have happen to her if the dolphins didn't show up. She would most likely be dead and her parents(mostly her mother)would be grieving. Most of the village would probably be secretly celebrating, probably even her father. She knew that he hated her. He would be glad to be rid of her. He just saw her as a disappointment. The tears had already started after her father yelled at her, and walked away to the house.
Nimue looked down at the ground, listening to the sound of the crunching sand as people started walking away.
That's when she felt a hand on her shoulder, and she looked up and saw Kala looking at her with sympathy all over face.
"It's okay," she said to her, giving her a comforting hug.
The tears had stopped falling afterwards.
"Now let's see if your a Rider or not," she said to her, gesturing to the chest with a dark blue, almost black, egg in it.
She just nodded, and walked up to the chest. Nimue touched the egg. Then the egg started getting cracks all along the shell. A dark blue head with a feather mane popped out of the shell. The little dragon gave a small roar at her, and she felt a swelling happiness envelope her. Making her forget what had just happen a few minutes ago. She reached a hand out to the little dragon and touched it. A hot sensation like boiling water flow throughout her, it was then replaced by a cold sensation like running her hand through the cold ocean.
"It's a male. Congratulations, Dragon Rider." Kala said to her, her dragon looking at me with its amber-brown eyes.
Nimue picked him up, he was dark blue with lighter dark blue under scales. His feathered mane and tail tuft was blue, as well as his eyes and a stripe running from his eyes to tail. He had blue membranes and black claws. He was everything she could have ever hoped for.
Kala gave her five scrolls to read, so she could find a name for him. Kala told her that she would be back in two years to take her to the Rider Base.
"Why can't you take me now?" Nimue asked her.
"I can't because of the other two who have already bonded with dragons, they are going to wait two years to develop their bonds. And you too need time develop your bond with him as well," she replied to her.
She looked down at the ground feeling disappointment, having to stay here for two years till she got to leave this place once and for all.
"Don't look so sad, use this time to reconnect with your family. You know your father doesn't really hate you, he's just mad at himself for not loving you more," Kala said.
Nimue didn't believe what she said about her father and reconnecting with her family. But she just nodded to her, and she nodded back, and said good by, and got on her dragon, and took off in the rain.
Nimue looked back at the Rider once more before starting on her way home in the rain with her scrolls and dragon in her arms, trying to keep them dry.
When she got home neither of my parents were up, so she went to her room and put her scrolls on her dresser, and put her dragon on her bed.
Nimue changed out of her wet clothes, dried her hair with a spare towel lying around in her room. Then she climbed into bed, allowing the dragon to climb under with her. He curled up against her side and fell asleep.
Nimue fell asleep with her arm draped over his warm sleeping body, and that's when she thought of his name.
"Hurricane," thinking of the storm going on outside
"Yes," replied a male voice.P.S. Yes I used a fan made tribe from Wings of Fire and I hope they don't mind, I just really liked this tribe. I know Nimue's life is kinda of sad with the whole father thing but I got way more twists and turns in the future of my other stories. So I hope you like it and please give me feedback. Oh and spoiler her sister Tatiana will appear in the future. Thanks for reading hope you like it.
