note: hi, my name is simply, i'm 16 and use they/them pronouns. this is just a bit of a side project to get myself better at writing.

the sun slowly lifted itself up from the underside of the earth. it was about 6:35 in the morning. sunshine leaked in through the blinds and danced ever so silently around the bedroom.

the boy raised his head off of his pillow and exhaled. new day. he thought. it took him a couple of minutes before he actually got out of bed, swinging his feet over the side, running his hand through his curly hair. he looked to his closet and slowly stood up. his vision went black for a moment and he was wobbly. he sighed as his vision readjusted itself.

travis pulled a baby blue hoodie over his head, scratching his curly hair once again. he stepped towards the bathroom, brushing his teeth and washing his face. he looked at himself in the mirror and raised a brow, looking at his features. maybe he'd try something new. taking a breath, he combed back some of his hair, pulling it into a ponytail on the back of his head. travis grinned at himself in the mirror. he grabbed his bag and headed to the lower level.

he slowly stepped down the stairs, he was feeling pretty good about himself. looking over to the clock, his eyes widened. oh shoot. it was almost 7:30, he would be late! he opened the freezer really fast, grabbing an eggo waffle from the package, eating it quickly. he looked to his mom who was cleaning up some stuff that was laying around. he hit the fridge door a few times to get her attention, waving goodbye to her. he brought his hands up, i love you, he signed.

goodbye, i love you, she signed, smiling at the younger boy, who returned the smile. she knew that the boy was aware she could hear him whenever he moved, but he preferred to sign to her. hopefully he'd be settled at his new school. when he headed towards the door, she turned around and frowned, she was somewhat upset that he never used his voice around her.

travis turned opened and closed the door behind him, quickly moving towards his bus stop. there was two others sitting there, one was on the sidewalk with his legs in the road, the other sat beside him.

the curly haired boy put his hands on his knees and panted. he felt like he had never ran so fast in his life. he looked to the boys, who looked back to him with an awkward glance. travis waved to them, smiling.

"bus is late," one of the boys sighed. "what's your name?" one of them asked. he had glasses and blonde hair cut into a bowl-cut, such an odd choice. over his arms he wore a blue jacket with a lighter blue and red sleeve.

travis brought his hand to his mouth, then thought for a moment. "travis," he said quietly. he also signed his name as he spoke. but instantly, he felt his cheeks warm up in embarrassment. he didn't need to do that. he only really needed to do that around his mom.

"my name is carson." he said, elbowing his friend next to him. turning his attention back to the curly haired boy in front of them.

the other boy looked over to travis, he had a black hoodie on with a baseball cap on top of his head. his hair was a dark brown, it was lighter in the sunlight. "schlatt." he said, looking back to his phone.

travis grinned and sat down on the sidewalk besides them, looking to carson, who looked right back at him. "you're in grade eleven right?" he asked the boy, raising a brow. travis nodded, shrugging.

"i'm starting today." travis said with a smile. "my mom transferred me here after we moved houses." the boy crossed his legs, looking down the road to see if the bus was coming yet. "are we in the same grade?"
