the two of them had finished the school tour in only a few minutes, cooper and travis headed towards the courtyard quickly after.
the courtyard was beautiful to travis, everything seemed so clean. there was benches scattered throughout the area. bushes lined the sidewalk, and in the center there was a small fountain. travis stood over the water for a moment, his eyes widening as he noticed that the fountain was a koi fish enclosure. so cool. the two of them sat on a bench under a tree, not to far from the fountain, travis looking to the sky as his head drifted into thought.
the blonde was a bit bored, they had a few more minutes until free period, maybe they'd get to know each other in the meantime. cooper elbowed the boy very lightly, causing the curly haired boy to jump. "oh shit." he muttered, his eyes grew wide as he realized travis' reaction. "didn't know i'd scare you so bad." he said quickly. "i'm sorry."
travis took a moment to respond, but the boy shrugged. "i-its fine." he stuttered, giggling. he looked to cooper and grinned, the blonde grinned back at him. travis folded his hands, twiddling his thumbs, waiting for cooper to keep talking.
cooper opened his mouth, thinking for a second before actually talking. "where did you go before you transferred here?" the boy asked, his eyes got lost in travis' brownish-hazel gaze. it sparkled in the sunlight.
travis patted his own head, sighing. eventually he'd have to talk about it, but he didn't want to right now. he shrugged. "i went to peach blossom academy." he said simply, "my mom moved me cause we couldn't really afford it anymore, we were also in dead nowhere." he exhaled, feeling like he had shrunk down into his own clothes.
it took the blonde a few minutes to process what travis said. but once he figured it out his thoughts clicked. "hey don't worry about it." cooper said, smiling. he did his best to brighten the mood. "i transferred here not to long ago, maybe in grade nine." he paused. "almost the same situation." he did his best to reassure travis, hoping that they could both relate to each other a bit more. "there was just a lot of crime in my neighborhood, so my parents didn't think we were safe."
before travis could say anything else, the school bell rang. "that's the free period, follow me." cooper grabbed onto travis' arm, taking the boy to the center of the courtyard. "this is where we always meet."

travis was sitting on the edge of the fountain, cooper was right by him, his mind wandered as the other boys gathered. two of them he recognized, but there were several others he didn't even know existed.
"oh hey," one of the boys said, pointing to travis. "you're that kid from the bus stop right?"
travis tore his eyes from the ground and looked up, he recognized the voice. "carson," he said, offering a smile. "right?" right beside the tall boy was schlatt. he didn't say anything, he only sat on the ground, his legs criss-chrossed. carson sat beside him.
"yeah thats right." he nodded with a smile.
"you two already met?" cooper asked, looking at carson, then to travis. he looked so confused. they must've lived in the same neighborhood then, right? carson explained to cooper what had happened the morning prior, how they met travis at the bus stop and he sat by them. cooper nodded, sitting back on the fountain side.
a taller boy- a bit taller than carson- stuck out his hand for travis to shake. he had black hair, a strong build, and circular glasses. "my names ted." he said. travis shook his hand, he had an oddly firm grip.
