chapter seven
the start of chaos in the household

"She wasn't anyone important." Finn said.
"Doesn't make it any better." Peggy grunted. "I know, I know. But I wasn't flirting-" He was cut off by Peggy smashing a glass on the floor.

"Don't fucking lie to me, Finn! I'm not believing any of it." She shouted, tears brimming her eyes, threatening to spill. "I get it, this isn't the way you planned your future. Trust me, this isn't how I planned mine either. I know you don't love me, but couldn't you have at least respected me?" A single tear dropped from her eye and rolled down her cheek. "A bit of dignity, a bit of maturity and a bit of respect for this marriage and for me." More and more tears fell down her cheeks.

"Was that too much to ask for?" A last tear fell down her left cheek and Finn moved forward, attempting brush it away but Peggy dodged his touch. "Don't." Was all she said.

Finn was silent, but the silence said enough. Peggy nodded continuously and threw her head back to avoid crying more. "No. Ok, no, I get it. It's fine." She said quietly. "I'm going to bed." She mumbled so quietly that if Finn hadn't been listening completely he wouldn't have heard her. "Pegs, please-" He began.

"Don't call me that." She huffed.

"You can't go to bed, it's only 6 o'clock!" Finn attempted to get Peggy to stay and talk to him.

Of course, he had no excuse. A pretty young lady showed an interest in him, and who was he to turn her down?

She was different to Peggy. Peggy enjoyed knitting sweaters, reading books accompanied by a warm cup of tea, going for picnics in the park on a sunny Sunday, standing up for herself and all of womankind and the occasional night out at the pub, which were few and far between.

Arabella, the young woman he met at the races, was rich and enjoyed horse riding, attending jazz bars every weekend and playing golf.

Arabella was fun, but could clearly not fit for something long term, which Finn has to remind himself, he already had.

Peggy dragged herself to her bed and flopped down onto it, face down. She was aware it wasn't exactly Finn's choice to marry her, but she would never do this to him. She couldn't do this to him, everything she did was for him. She sacrificed her life to end the war between their families. She could've traveled the world, fallen in love, made friendships and lived.

That was no longer an option though. She was married now. She couldn't travel the world, or fall in love. She thought she could fall in love with Finn, but that thought seemed so distant.

Peggy had a habit of overreacting quickly without thinking logically over the situation, and she began to wonder if she was being to hard on her newlywed husband. He wasn't used to being in a committed relationship, it had just been thrown at him.

Memories of their first night together flooded Peggy's mind. How she danced with all of his brothers, the gazes they stole at any moment they could without being caught by the other and the conversation they had as they laid in bed.

"Could you ever love me? Answer honestly. No offence will be taken."
"Yes. And could you ever love me?"
                    "Definitely."

Did he love her? Would he love her eventually? As the thoughts wandered through her head, she slowly began drifting off to sleep, still in her deep blue dress she had on at the races, her light makeup still on her face and her wild locks tucked behind her ears. Her boots still rested on her small feet but she couldn't care. She was tired, exhausted even. She just wanted the day to be over, after all, happiness was her human right.

8:05

For Finn Shelby, time was moving painfully slowly. It had been two hours since his argument with Peggy, yet it was all that occupied his mind. She sound of the glass shattering rung in his ears, the broken shards still scattered over the floor as he sat at the dining room table looking at the mess. He wasn't sure if Peggy would forgive him, but he couldn't let her tell her brothers - they'd have his head. He had to make sure he forgave him, he would do whatever it took for her to forgive him.

He weighed out his options.

1) Give her a gift, take her out to dinner and butter up to her
2) Apologise constantly and annoy her into forgiving him
3) Act as if nothing had happened, pretend that everything was perfect
Or 4) Gaslight her, manipulate her into forgiving him.

In his eyes, they were all good options so he chose the one that would be the most entertaining. He knew what he was doing was wrong but he couldn't help it, if he could manipulate his wife into doing what he wanted then he could at least have some fun while he done it.

He checked the clock again. 10:54. He made his way up the stairs to their shared bedroom. He opened the door to Peggy's body lazily flung over the bed, her legs hanging off the side and her cheek smushed together with the bed covers. She was still fully dressed. He slid her boots off of her feet and chucked them to the side. He struggled to undress her but managed eventually. He unclipped her bra leaving her exposed, he blushed profusely before shaking his head and searching for her pajama's. Although he didn't know where she kept her nightgowns, so he just put her in one of his shirts.

He got changed himself and tucked Peggy into bed, placing a kiss on her forehead ever so gently. "Goodnight, Pegs." He muttered before climbing into bed beside her.

As he laid awake, staring at the growing moss patch on the ceiling he thought about everything. He wondered if Peggy loved him, or if she hated him. He wondered what Arabella was doing. He wondered if marrying Peggy was the right thing to do. He thought about how much freedom he would have now. Which only made him dislike the idea of marriage more, after all, freedom is his human right.
