Chapter 1: Meeting Scarlet

(Winston's POV)

      I was lighting up a cigarette as my partner watched two security guards open the gate to the facility.

"The daughters don't mess around with security." Geralt chuckled. "What do you say, Winston?" he asked me as we pulled into the facility. Young Geralt, a very ambitious detective who has a very odd strength when it comes to the business of work. Questions, he asked the smart and seemingly irrelevant ones that lead to the bigger picture.

"Mercenaries that equipped with Faunheisser technology," I said. "You even have some Interbreeds guarding the place." It was pretty fascinating how some of these mercenaries accepted the Rebirth serum from the Faunheissers, especially after what happened with the breakout. But no matter the consequences, humanity will do anything to become stronger.

Geralt managed to park the car in a reserved spot near the facility. Getting out of the car, we both noticed a thunderstorm rolling in.

"How the hell can it rain this much in a damn desert?" Geralt said gazing at the storm.
"That sounds like a question for Mrs.Scarlet." I sighed. As soon as her name came out of my mouth, the doors to the facility opened and she came out. She was in her dress for work: the lab coat and whatnot. She walked to the two of us.
"Hello Winston." we shook hands. She nodded at Geralt.
"You look as pretty than the first day we met to begin this case." Geralt complimented her.
"Why thank you," her expression lightened. "It's not like I get out of this hellhole often," she said with a very vibrant smile. "Shall we begin?" she asked us both. We both nodded and began following her into the facility. The whole inside was completely white. We were a corridor with various doors that entered into places of what Geralt and I could only assume to be holding places for any patients with troubles, or more projects.

"So why do you consider this place to be a hellhole, Scarlet?" Geralt asked her. She sighed and shook her head.
"Because I enjoy being out in the world..." she replied to him.
"Well nothing is stop—" he began.
"There is... if you have a sister who owns almost all of the facility's security details and biology department." she interrupted him. "Plus... I don't like arguing." she said. "She relies on me for finishing Rebirth."
"I thought Rebirth was finished." I said with "Interbreeds are among us Dr. Faunheisser."
   "There are some imperfections about Project Rebirth that Rena wants to... well... perfect," she told us. "Stuff that's all science and blah blah blah..." she chuckled.

After going down the corridor for a bit, we arrived at a security room which was guarded by a voluptuously figured guard with peculiar-looking blue eyes. Of course, Geralt being Geralt has something to say about this.

"Who is this lovely lady?" he asked Scarlet. The guard didn't seem to react to his inquiry.
"This guard will be your escort throughout the facility during your investigation," she said. "Her name is Victoria Adams," she said.
"Looks like our lucky day, huh Winston?" Geralt laughed. I just rolled my eyes.
"Cut the nonsense Geralt we got more important matters to tend to," I told him.
"Right..." Scarlet mumbled as she opened the door to the security room. The room had many monitors observing many rooms in the facility. Once we entered and the door was shut, I had developed some questions of my own over what I've heard so far.

"So Project Rebirth isn't finished?" I asked her. She was about to go to the main console of the security system but paused. She turned towards me.
"Rena has been lying to me ever since the Breakout," Scarlet said. "There was an addition to the DNA alternations that someone did right before the breakout...."
"Someone?" Geralt asked.
"Our corporation had multiple scientists working here when our parents were alive. Any of them could have altered the DNA in Rebirth," she replied.
"Rena knows that someone added something to the DNA within the Rebirth serum."
     "I would assume so with her continuing your parents' work." Geralt said.
     "Yes and now all she wants to do is bury her pain and finish what mom and dad started," she said sounding a little perturbed. "Well... take this USB to extract the videos you need... Imma leave you two to your investigating." she handed the USB to me and typed out a password to the console and went to the door.

    "Please detectives, find out who tried to ruin our family's corporation..." she said before exiting the room and Victoria entered the room and took her post beside the door.

    "Oh boy..." I sighed. "It's been a while since I've had a case like this..."
    "And this was a great way to start off my first case." Geralt said with a confident smile.
